  One

  Alan

I glance at the diploma sitting on the passenger's seat as I stop in front of the entrance of WS Engineering Incorporated, a well-known billion dollar engineering company that my father, Wilbert Spencer, owns. It’s the biggest technology company in Alabama.

Yes, WS stands for Wilber Spencer, of course.

I take my diploma as I exit my car and let the company valet park it for me. I finally earned my master's degree in technological engineering just a few weeks ago from Alabama University, and now I'm here to collect my prize. My father had promised me that he would be giving me a promotion over the technology development sector of the company once I earn my degree.

Now here I am, holding the proof and ready for that much-awaited promotion. I'm even wearing my best suit and tie. I get inside the elevator and press the top floor and admire my reflection on the glass surrounding the space.

What a great day to be promoted. I smirk to myself before exiting the elevator as it reaches the top floor. I get a few greetings from the employees as I make my way to my father's office.

"Good morning, Mr. Spencer," Mandy, my father's secretary greets as I stop by her desk.

"Good morning to you too, Mandy," I give her a smile that usually makes the girls weak in the knee.

"Is my Mr. Wilbert Spencer around?" I add. She smiles at the way I address my father.

"Yes, he actually just came back from an early meeting. He's in his office right now. Would you like me to inform him that you're around?" My father has a strict rule that only his secretary can disturb him in his office. Every single person who wants to see him needs to go through Mandy first. No exceptions, not even family.

"Please do. I'm sure he's been expecting me," I lean back on Mandy's desk as she makes her way to my father's office.

She nods at me, signaling me that I can enter. I confidently walk towards the office as she opens the door for me.

"Thank you, Mandy. Oh, and by the way, you look extra gorgeous today," I wink at her while passing her, and her face turns red.

I can see my father's expression as he shakes his head at me. Mandy closes the door and leaves the two of us to get down to business. I take a seat on the chair directly in front of his desk and cross my legs as I place the diploma on my lap.

"You just flirt with every single girl that your eyes lay on, don't you?" my father scoffs.

"No, not all of them. Only those who ask for it," I shoot back, causing my father to rub the sides of his head.

"Anyway, so you finally decided to show up. That took you long enough," he tells me.

"Well, since I'm about to get my promotion, I thought that I should take a quick vacation before I start to become busy," I reply confidently.

"Who says you're going to be busy?" Father asks me.

My confidence instantly sinks after hearing his question.

"Didn't you promise me a promotion once I get my master's degree?" I ask, not batting an eyelash.

"That's true, but before I push through with your promotion, I want you to do something else," he tells me as he leans back on his chair.

"What is it now?" A hint of annoyance leaks in my voice.

"I need you to settle down," he tells me in a more serious tone.

"Is this not settled down enough for you?" I ask as I gesture to myself, sitting on the chair.

"Now's not the time for you to act like a smart-ass, Alan. You know exactly what I mean," he sounds solemn, and he's giving me the 'look,' meaning he's very serious, and nothing can sway him.

Of course, I do, but does he really expect me to settle down just because he wants me too? And on such very short notice, might I add.

"Come on, Dad. You're not serious, are you?" I lean forward as I ask.

"Do I look like I'm joking? In case you're not aware, Alan, you have quite a reputation that people know about. I can't let your reputation as a playboy be the center of gossip and whatnot around here. That reputation of yours might be – no scratch that – is detrimental to the company," he starts to get even more serious judging by the look on his face and the tone of his voice.

"But that's not even part of the deal, Dad. You're unfair about this. You can't just change the terms of the deal whenever you want to," I try to argue.

"Who says I can't?" a smirk appears on his face. "That is my prerogative. I am the ow
ner of this company, after all."

I can't believe him. This is so unfair! I try to control myself from getting angry since it won't help with the situation.

Knowing my father, once he says he wants me to do something, I usually do it. It's not like I have a choice anyway, and I really want this promotion so bad. However, I'm just not ready to settle down yet.

How can I even settle down, when I don't even have anyone that I like well enough to date seriously?

Besides, the only woman that I can think of that is even halfway intelligent enough to keep me from being bored is Sophia Murray, the company's lead data analyst.

Sophia and I have had several good conversations over how statistics can be used to lead the next technological advances. Now that I think about it, she's quite an ideal woman. She's smart, well put together, and not bad on the eyes either.

An idea suddenly pops in my head as I think about her. Maybe I can ask her to pretend to be my fiancée until I get the promotion? Then after that, we can go on with our lives and just say that things didn't work out between us.

This plan could actually be my chance, and Sophia's just the perfect woman to play the role. I just hope that she'll agree and go along with it.

  Sophia

I stand in front of the WS Engineering Incorporated building as I look up at the high structure. I take a deep breath before heading inside. Another day at work, how fun.

Don't get me wrong, I love being a data analyst, and not a lot of people are allowed to work at such a large and prestigious company like WS Engineering Incorporated. But there are just days when all the exhaustion gets to me, especially when the workload gets heavy and when the deadlines that we need to meet is nearing.

Being a single working mom is no walk in the park, let me tell you. I wake up early in the morning to make sure my two-year-old daughter, Nina, is all set for the day before I get ready and leave for work. Just by doing that takes up a lot of my energy already.

Thank God, my mom and dad are around to help take care of my little girl while I'm at work. But even if being a single working mom is a tough job, I wouldn't change a thing. Nina is the best thing that's ever happened to me, which is why I work my butt off and do my best to give her a good life.

When I reach the floor of our department, I walk over to my station, put my stuff down, and I turn on the monitor to login to my account. I check my e-mail for the agenda of the day, as I usually do daily.

I sigh as I scroll through quite a good number of data that I need to work on. This is going to be a long day. Before I start with anything, I get up from my chair and head towards the pantry to grab a cup of coffee. I'm going to need that extra boost of energy if I want to make it through today.

"Sophia," Mandy, our boss's secretary, calls me as I pass by her station, gesturing me to come over.

"Good morning, Ms. Mandy," I greet as I approach her as I hold my cup of coffee.

"Good morning to you, too," she smiles. "Before you start with your agenda for today, Mr. Alan Spencer wants to see you in his office."

"Me?" I ask as I put my hand over my chest, obviously confused.

"Yes. Mr. Alan Spencer said that he needs to discuss something with you," Mandy smiles, and I unconsciously nod my head before heading back to my station.

I put my coffee down and grab the tablet that the company provided for each of their employees in case I need to take notes or something. I start making my way to Alan Spencer's office.

I guess he's back already. I wonder why he suddenly wants to see me. I mean, we've had a few conversations, but all of them are related to work. That usually happens when we meet in the conference room, where we can use multiple smart boards to review the information needed to make new decisions, and not to mention other people are present.

I shake my senseless thoughts as I arrive outside of his office. I knock at the door to let him know that I'm already there.

  "Come in," he calls out.

"Good morning, Alan. Mandy said that you wanted to see me?" I slowly enter his office and stop after taking just a few steps inside.

"Yes, that's correct, and good morning to you too, Ms. Murray," he gives me a smile that most girls usually go crazy for.

I subtly scan the room with just my eyes and see that no one else is present beside me. I'm surprised and confused as to why Alan wants to see me.

Usually, when we have meetings, it includes several people that are involved in the collaborative process.

"Have a seat," he gestures to the chair across from his desk while I follow. "I don't want to beat around the bush, so I'm just going to go for it. I have a really odd request for you."

"A request?" A look of confusion forms on my face.

"Yes. I need you to pretend to be my fiancée," my eyes widen in surprise at his words. Did I hear him right? He wants me to pretend to be his fiancée?

"I beg your pardon?" I ask in hopes that I misheard him.

Alan sighs and gets up from his chair and walks over to my side. He sits on the edge of his desk and continues to further explain.

"Listen, I know this too much to ask, but I really need your help. My father said that for my promotion to push through, I first need to settle down and get married," he tells me. "The thing is, you're the only female that I know that is intelligent and beautiful enough that I feel I would actually enjoy spending time with."

I can feel the heat creep up on my face from his compliments.

"Look, I just need you to pretend for a few months after I get promoted, then after that, we can break the engagement off and carry on," he adds, while I just continue to listen. "I will also pay you enough so that you can pay off your student loans, and I'll even pay for your daughter's college."

I let out a soft sigh before looking up at him.

"I'm sorry, Alan. But as tempting as your offer sounds, I don't think I can do it," I admit.

  Alan's face falls.

Then, my entire financial burden enters my mind all at once. If I take this offer, a lot of it can instantly disappear. I'd hate myself if I let Nina bear the stress just because I'm unable to pay my loans.

"On second thought, I think I can help you with that," I state, and Alan's eyes suddenly light up after hearing my words.

"Really? You'll do it?" The tone of his voice is full of excitement while I nod.

"Yes, Alan," I tell him. " I like your compensation. However, do you mind if I set rules for this agreement?"

"No, not at all," he replies.

"Well, if we're going to do this, there should be no intimate gestures unless and only if needed. No hugging, no kissing, ho holding hands or anything like that," I tell Alan. He agrees to everything.

"So, do we have a deal then?" he extends his hand in front of me for a handshake.

I hesitate a bit before taking it.

"Deal," I declare as we shake on it.

This is it, I'm really doing this.

The next day, I go straight to the mall first thing in the morning. I want to get the plan in motion as early as possible. First order of business, I need to buy an engagement ring for Sophia.

I slightly smile behind the wheel as I continue to drive. To be honest, I didn’t think that she’d agree right on the spot. But I guess she really needs the money since I could see the hesitation on her face while we were talking yesterday.

I park my car at the first empty slot that I see and head inside the mall. I lift my hand to check the time and see that it’s ten o’clock in the morning. Ah, perfect timing. I’m right on time for the mall’s opening.

I head up to the floor where the jewellery store is located at. It’s the same jewellery store that my mom buys her ‘best friends’ as they would call diamonds.

“Hi, Mr. Spencer. Welcome back. How may I assist you this morning?” Cece, the manager, approaches me with her arms spread out.

“Hi, Cece. How are you?” I ask as I accept her
hug.

Cece has been the one handling and assisting with my mom’s purchases ever since I was a little kid, which is why we’ve developed some sort of aunt and nephew relationship with her. Anyway, she leads me further in to the store as I look around.

“I’ve been well. How about you? I haven’t seen you in such a long time. You’re mom was just here a couple of days ago.” She tells me.

“Yeah, I’ve heard. I’ve just been so busy with work.” I casually say.

“So what brings you here so early?” She asks.

“I’m looking for actually looking to buy an engagement ring.” I tell her as I stop in front of the display case with a wide range of options.

“Ah, I see.” She gives me a smile as she walks behind the display case. “Well, you came in at a good day then. There are a few new designs that just came earlier.” She lays out a couple of rings on top of the glass. As usual, Cece’s impeccable taste in jewellery shows.

I fixate my eyes on one ring on the farthest right. It looks so elegant and I know it would look great on Sophia’s finger. I hand over my credit card to Cece and tell her my choice. She proceeds to process my purchase, and I leave soon after.

When I reach the office, I walk over to Mandy’s station to ask if my father is available at this time. She gets up from her chair to tell him that I’m here to see him. Mandy call me and says that I can go in my father’s office.

“You’ve been stopping by my office so often.” He casually leans back on his chair. “What is it this time?” He asks.
