Stay: The Shores Book Two Page 11

by York, Allie

“What if she says no?” I mumbled to Drew who leaned next to me against the Jeep. She’d called me three times, then finally texted me saying she was pissed that she had to get dressed up for something that I didn’t warn her about. I ignored it. Not answering her calls was the hardest thing I’d ever done.

“She won’t,” he answered like it was the most obvious thing ever.

“She loves you, trust me.” Porter chimed in. I could only nod and hope they were right. If she turned me down, I’d keep asking, every day if I had to, until she told me yes.

It took another ten minutes for her to text me back that she was on her way and that I owed her big for not telling her we had a party to go to. Maybe the note I left her was a lie, but it would be worth it. The guys cleared out and I went down to the beach where we’d set up and waited. Harris had proposed with all of us present, but I didn’t want that. I want her all to myself. Ranger and I got in position when I heard her car pull into the gravel lot. I put on his bowtie and the sign I made. I checked my pocket for the millionth time, rubbing my thumb across the box. It had only been three months since we found out about the baby, and until then we weren’t even together. The thought it was too soon crossed my mind, but then I saw her step on to the sand. Everything else vanished. A light breeze blew off the water ruffling her dress, when Blair stopped to cover her mouth. She was nearly halfway too us and had obviously seen the sign on Ranger’s neck. Mom, will you marry dad? With her mouth still covered, she walked the rest of the way to me. As soon as she stopped on the edge of the blanket under the tent we’d put up, I dropped to my knee in front of her. My hands were sweating, and my mouth went dry. I couldn’t read her face and it scared the fuck out of me. I’d rehearsed my speech over and over for a week, but suddenly, it vanished.

“Blair, I had a whole romantic speech prepared, but I can’t wait through it to ask…” I shook my head and looked up at her. She was staring down at me, tears in her eyes. “Will you marry me?”

One second passed, then two, my heart sped up, and finally, Blair nodded. I jumped to my feet, grabbing her and hauling her to me, and kissed her. When I stopped kissing her long enough to remember the ring, I dug it out of my pocket and slid it on her finger. Just in time for Ranger to take off toward the water. When yelling for him didn’t work, Blair and I followed the stupid dog down to the beach and joined him in the waves.

I grabbed Blair and wrapped her in my arms from behind. “Do I get to fuck you in the Jeep later?” I growled in her ear, cupping her tit.

“Oh definitely.” Blair held her hand out to look down at the ring and turned to kiss me. Sometimes things come together when you decide to stay instead of run.
