Elinor smiled. “The help we need.”

  Elinor

"A forest spirit in the Dragon Territory gave this to me," I explained to the others, turning the flower over in my hand. Its leaves moved, even though it had been uprooted months ago.

"When did you go to the Dragon Territory? As a matter of fact, how?"

I glared at Darian. “Do we really have time to talk about that now?”

Three Bleeders ran through the flames, but in seconds, Will beheaded them. I had heard his entire conversation with his brother Cain. A second more, and I would have been able to kill the bastard myself. But now he was somewhere beyond the walls of fire Cyrus had created, out of my reach. Still, I wanted nothing more than to find him and end his pathetic existence.

"We need to kill all the witches remaining," Cyrus said as he tried to straighten his wing and winced. "If they're left alive, they'll keep opening portals."

“I’ll take care of the witches,” Will volunteered. “I’m the fastest one here. Elinor, use the flower.”

I nodded as he walked towards the flames, and Darian joined him. "I'll come with you."

We were all speechless for a moment, even Will, but he nodded in agreement, and Cyrus opened a passageway through the flames for them. Both men rushed through, and I listened as Darian's wolf growled and began to fight beyond the fire.

"Do you know how to use the flower?" Skye asked, and I shook my head.

All I'd been told was to whisper into the flower, and I'd get help wherever I was. Six Bleeders suddenly broke through the flames, two attacking Skye, three bearing down on Cyrus, and one headed my way. I lifted my hand, and a spike that grew from the earth killed my opponent.

I held the flower up to my mouth, watching as Skye and Cyrus fought. "Help me! Please, we need your help!" I looked down at the flower, and nothing happened, though the leaves continued to move. "I need help! Please!"

But then the leaves stopped moving, and my smile of hope vanished as the flower rotted. It fell from my hand, turning to dust before it even touched the bloodied forest floor.

"Was that the flower?" Skye ran over to me, and I gasped, feeling as though something had just sucked all the oxygen out of the air. "Did it just die!”

"I-I did what I was told to do. I asked for help!"

Skye and I ducked as Will and Darian fell through the flames, and Cyrus put out the fire that clung to their clothes.

"William!" Cain's voice echoed through the night, and we all grew still. "William! Give me the girl, and I'll spare the rest!"

Will and Darian got to their feet.

“We couldn’t get to all the witches.” Darian winced as he turned his left arm, and I saw a chunk of his arm missing. I focused on the wound, healing it as yet more Bleeders poured into our circle. “Did you use the flower?”

“It died,” I grumbled as the wound healed.

"William!" Cain's voice echoed around us again. "Make a choice! You can all die, or just you, and I get the girl!"

"Shut the fuck up, Cain!" I growled in frustration. "I'm sorry, Cyrus, but we're out of options. Use your father's power. Open a portal."

“And if I lose control?” Cyrus grumbled.

“We’ll handle things if it comes to that,” Darian told him.

We all jumped back as a figure rose from the earth right in front of where I stood. In seconds, a transparent woman stood within the circle, turning slowly until she faced me. She reminded me of the ghosts living with the Nephilim Sisters.

She looked fae, with long and pointy ears, but she didn't have the white hair all Fae had. There were two white lines below her eyes and one each going down her jawline, and she wore a white dress and had silver bracelets up to her elbows.

"Who are you?" I asked, and she merely smiled. Colorful butterfly wings sprouted from her back. "It's you, isn't it? You're the spirit that gave me the flower."

The spirit I had met had been a small girl that could fit in the palm of my hand. Still, even with all I’d seen, I didn’t know why I was surprised that she could change her appearance.

More spirits appeared within the circle, men and women with pointy ears like her but dressed in silver armor. A sword materialized in her hand, and my shoulders dropped with relief.

"Thank you," I told her, and outside the circle, the Bleeders and the remaining resurrected supernatural creatures began to shriek in agony.

Cyrus dropped the wall of flames, and she vanished along with the others. Though it was brutal to watch, I couldn’t look away as they began cutting the vampires down. When the Bleeders tried to attack the spirits, their claws and teeth passed right through their bodies. Meanwhile, the spirits’ swords and arrows had no trouble piercing the flesh of the vampires and resurrected supernaturals, and they were killing them in droves. Darian, Skye, and Cyrus joined the fight once more, and so did Will, although I was sure he was going in search of Cain. A portal appeared then winked out of existence again as a transparent sword flew through the air and pierced the heart of the witch who opened it. Five of the spirits surrounded me, protecting me from attack. We were no longer needed as they laid waste to the vampires.

I spotted Will and Cain, but a spirit blocked me from leaving the protective circle as I stepped forward. He shook his head at me and then turned his back. I watched as Will threw Cain to the ground, his clawed hand around Cain’s throat.

I strained my ears to hear what they were saying to each other above the chaos.

“Where is Vivian?” I heard Will hiss.

Cain laughed, the sound strained with Will choking him. “She’ll reappear soon enough. She's unstable, that one, and you knew it. You shouldn't have pissed her off. But you can't help making enemies, can you?”

He attacked Will again, and I strained to keep up with them as they fought. I was practically bouncing on my feet with the need to get to them. The vampire's numbers were dwindling. Cain vanished, but before he could get far, Will grabbed him by the neck and threw him into a tree.

The tree split, and Cain fell to the ground before slowly rising to his knees.

"Go ahead, Will! Kill me! But Vivian will tell the Queen the truth if I die! The Queen will still kill you!"

"But you'll die before me, and I’m fine with that," Will told him, his entire face now covered with black veins.

Cain climbed to his feet. "Do you think she loves you, Will? Do you actually think a filthy werewolf can love you? And even if she does, she'll die one day and leave you behind! You gave up everything for a woman who can’t stay with you."

"I'll love her as long as there is breath in her body, and long after it leaves her. I don't expect you to understand, Cain. You don't have a soul, but I do."

Cain attacked Will, and my heart constricted as I saw the dagger Cain pulled from his sleeve. It was as if time slowed for a moment. I ran forward, running through the body of the forest spirit who protected me.

Will’s nails sliced the side of Cain’s throat open as Cain’s dagger found its home in Will's chest. I screamed, and thunder clapped overhead as a shower of lightning bolts fell to the earth, knocking Cain away from Will.

As time had slowed, now it sped up, faster than I could run as Will fell to the ground, blood gushing from his chest. Cain appeared beside him, his red eyes on me as he threw a small bottle to the ground and a portal opened.

  “No! Will!”

He grabbed Will's arm and stepped into the portal. I sent a lightning bolt to strike Cain's hand and face, but it worked against me, pushing him into the portal. I reached out to Will, my hand so close . . . but Cain yanked Will into the portal with him, as blood still poured from his chest.

  “Elinor,” he called weakly.

“Will!” My body shook as I screamed, a part of my soul tearing away with him. “Will!”

Cain gave him a tug, and they both fell through the portal, then it disappeared. I fell to the ground where the portal had been, turning in a circle on my knees, my eyes blurring with tears as I looke
d for it.

"No. No. No, no, no, no!" I shouted. Cyrus appeared beside me, as did the forest spirit, her blue eyes sad. "Where is he?" No one answered as I got to my feet, still searching for the portal. "Where did he go? Will!"

“Elinor . . .” Cyrus said, but all I could do was scream.

I screamed until my throat felt sore, until the heavens opened up and cried as well.

I screamed as the spirits killed the last of the vampires. And when I couldn't scream anymore, I fell to my knees, my body numb as I stared at Will's blood on the forest floor.

Reviews of my books are an incredibly valuable tool in my arsenal for getting attention. Unfortunately, as an independent author, I do not have the deep pockets of the Big City publishing firms. This means you will not see my book cover on the subway or in TV ads.

  (Maybe one day!)

But I do have something much more powerful and effective than that, and it’s something those publishers would kill to get their hands on:

A WONDERFUL bunch of readers who are committed and loyal!

Honest reviews of my books help get the attention of other readers like yourselves.
