  Keely had a stalker.

  A really, really shitty stalker.

Could you even call him a stalker when he didn’t even try to hide? Mind you, it would be hard to hide when you were that freaking huge. She knew these guys came big, and he wasn’t as big as the warrior who was mated to Sophie. That guy was a beast. Seriously, if he was proportional all over then. . .

Well, Keely didn’t want to think about that.

  He was Sophie’s problem.

  Que was hers.

  Unfortunately.

She twirled around. Glared at him. “Stop following me.”

He didn’t even take a second to look guilty. Didn’t hesitate. “No.”

She slammed her hands on her hips. “Seriously?”

“I am serious.” He tilted his head to one side. “Did you think that I joked? I do not know how to joke.”

“You also don’t know how to take a hint.”

“How does one take a hint?”

“Exactly!” She threw her hands into the air.

He stared at her in confusion. “Exactly, what?”

“Look. I think that I’ve been patient. I think I’ve been nice. Now I’m just gonna lay it all out.”

He blinked. “You will lay it all out?”

“Yes. Lay. It. Out. You listening?”

He looked around as though he thought she was talking to someone else. “To you?”

“Yes. To me. Who else is around to listen to?” She spun her hand around, encompassing the quiet, wooded area they were walking through. This settlement was built close to the ocean and there was much more foliage than there was towards the center of the planet which was more desert-like. She heard some shuffling from small animals moving through the densely-packed undergrowth. It was growing dark. She’d worked late for her boss, Mila, and was on her way back to the house the Zerconians had kindly given her to live in.

  When she’d spotted him. Again.

“Nobody. But considering I was already listening—and answering—I had wondered who you were talking about.”

“But that’s just it, you’re not listening. You have to stop following me, Que.”

  “No.”

Up went her arms again. The more emotion she felt, the more she tended to, well, move. Arms, hands, fingers, head, sometimes even her legs and feet. Jerry, the guy that her stepfather had arranged for her to marry back on Earth had called her a puppet. And that bastard sure knew how to pull her strings.

That reminder of jerky Jerry made her all the more determined to make Que understand that she did not want him.

Don’t you? He’s hot. So hot it made her feel a little weak-kneed at times. And Keely wasn’t a weak-kneed kind of girl. She’d always been practical. And smart. She’d learned early on how to hide her true thoughts and emotions, to be patient and wait. But somehow all of that disappeared when she was around Que. He made her antsy, stirred her temper, and he had her body humming in awareness. Which was pretty crazy considering she’d never even touched him.

As soon as she saw him, her nipples went hard and the lips of her pussy grew slick. It was embarrassing and annoying and if her vibrator hadn’t been blown to pieces on their ship months ago, she knew it would be getting a hell of a work out.

  Damn she missed it.

But it didn’t matter that she found him sexy, that her body reacted to him. Keely had no intention of taking anything further. She didn’t need a man.

What she needed was to figure out a way of getting her hands on a vibrator. Stat.

Except he’s not a man, Keely.

He still has a dick. Probably a big, delicious cock that. . .okay, stop it. Focus.

So far, Blue and Ellie’s mates had proven to be honorable. Protective. Caring. If a little on the bossy side. But they hadn’t failed Ellie or Blue.

  Just as well.

But that didn’t mean it would work out for Keely. Good guys existed. She knew that. She didn’t think all men were like her stepfather or Jerry-the-jerk. Jack, Marc, and Tane were all examples of great guys. But Keely wasn’t interested in them. They didn’t stir her at all. Keely didn’t attract good guys. She attracted psychos, liars, and cheaters. Which meant steering clear of men was high on her priority list.

“You can’t just say no,” she informed him.

He crossed his arms over his massive chest. And it was massive.

  “I just did.”

  “I have rights you know.”

  “Rights?”

“Yes, I have the right to walk around and not be harassed.”

His eyes narrowed. The air around her turned electric with his anger. She felt the tremble start low in her belly. She tried to pretend she was tough and hard, but a big, angry man was a trigger for her.

Which wasn’t great when she lived on a planet of huge men. Thankfully, most of them seemed to have their emotions locked down. But right now, Que’s were leaking out all over the place.

He’s not Arnold, Keely. He’s not going to hurt you.

“Who is harassing you?” he rumbled.

Really? Was he really that clueless?

  “You a
re.” She wished her voice was stronger, but it came out as a whisper.

“Me?” He stared at her in shock. “I am not harassing you.”

Her temper started nudging away her fear. “What do you call it when you follow me all the time, when you hang around outside my house?”

  “Protecting you.”

She blinked at the answer. Did he really think that?

  “I don’t need protection.”

“You are female. Small. Delicate. Fragile. You walk around without an escort. This is not acceptable. Anything could happen to you.”

“There is hardly any crime here.”

“That does not matter. There has been crime recently. You could be harmed. So I follow you to watch over you.”

She studied him, felt something try to pierce one of the many layers she’d erected to keep herself from being hurt. “I am not yours.”

His head tipped back. “You will be.”

She shook her head. “I know that when Zerconians touch their mate skin-to-skin they know instantly that she is yours, but we haven’t touched.”

“Because you have not allowed it.”

She raised her eyebrows. “You’re a big guy. You could make me touch you. Then you would know for sure.”

Jeez, Keely. Way to give him ideas.

He looked horrified. “Forcing touch on a female is abhorrent. I would never do that.”

Her breathing quickened. Don’t believe him. You cannot believe him.

“So even though you think you are my mate, and I’m not saying I believe that, you won’t touch me to make sure?”

“Not without your permission or unless I believed you to be in danger. Mila has made that very clear.”

Right. Mila’s infamous Intro to Bagging Yourself a Human Mate 101. Not that she actually called the courses she ran for Zerconian warriors that.

She tilted her head to one side, trying to understand him. “But you guys need to find your mates, right? Or you risk falling victim to the mating fever?”

  “Yes.”

“So, you’re hoping by following me around you’ll get a chance to touch me? That I might trip and fall and you can offer me your hand and then bam! I’m yours.”

  “Bam? What is this bam?”

“The mating bond is the bam.”

His face cleared. Then he seemed to think over what she said. “I am not following you in the hopes I would get to touch you.”

“Really?” She couldn’t help being suspicious. Nobody just did things for others without an ulterior motive. Right? Everything was a business transaction. Well, unless you were talking about family. In her case, her friends were her family. He wasn’t one of them.

“Then why are you following me?” she asked.

  “To protect you.”

She sighed. “And we keep going around in a circle.”

“How can we go around in a circle when we are not moving?”

She ran her hand over her face tiredly. It had been a long day and he was making it even longer.

“You are tired. You work too much. I shall speak to Mila about this,” he stated arrogantly.

She moved her hand away from her face to scowl at him. “You will not.”

He ran his gaze over her. “You are exhausted. It is unacceptable.”

“I am not exhausted. What I am is busy. We have a lot to do with a new group of women arriving in a few weeks. Right now, I want to go home, put my feet up, eat some food, and go to bed. I’m sure you’d like to do the same as you’ve no doubt been working all day as well.”

“I am not tired. Warriors do not get tired.” He looked affronted that she might suggest otherwise, and she ridiculously found herself biting back a smile. She would not find him cute. She would not.

  “Uh-huh, sure they don’t, Superman.”

  “Who is this Superman?”

“Doesn’t matter. Here’s the thing. It’s sweet you want to protect me, really. But I don’t need your protection. I don’t need you following me. On Earth, that sort of thing would get you arrested.”

“I would be arrested for protecting my mate?” He shook his head. “Human laws are very odd.”

“You wouldn’t be arrested for protecting me. You’d be arrested for following me around like this. Because I’m not your mate.”

She tried to be firm, but for some ridiculous reason her voice softened, as though she didn’t want to hurt him. Why did she care? She didn’t know him.

Because he was looking out for her.

When her mother left her, she’d been four. And she’d had to quickly learn to protect herself. She was used to it. So she didn’t need Que to watch out for her.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone to lean on, though?

Nope. Well, if they got attacked by some fire-breathing dragon, she wasn’t saying that she wouldn’t happily let him take point on that. Keely was no fool, she knew her strengths and weaknesses. She wasn’t a warrior. But she was smart.

She and her friends all looked out for each other, but there were things even they didn’t know about Keely, a little piece of her that she kept to herself. That no one could reach, not even them.

“I am your mate. And because I am your mate, it is my right to escort you. Once the bond is in place, you shall not leave my house without a proper guard, you will get plenty of rest so you do not look so tired. As you shall not be working that should be easily achieved.”

“You know, as much of the macho bullshit I run into around here, that has to be the biggest amount of macho bullshit I’ve had the misfortune to hear. Not work? A guard? Rest? Have you heard any of what you just said?”

“I heard all of it. I am not deaf.”

“You’re not making a good case for yourself.”

“Case for myself?” He stared at her in confusion.

“For me wanting to be your mate. First of all, I don’t need an escort. Second, I don’t need you telling me to rest and third, nobody tells me whether I can or can’t work.”

“But you will not need to work. I shall support you.”

“I don’t need you to support me. And even if we were mates, and I doubt the universe would be so cruel to give me such an arrogant, dictatorial mate, I would still work.”

“But why?” He looked genuinely confused.

  “Because I like it.”

He nodded once. Really? Did she get through to him?

“You will like keeping my home as well.”

Yeah, she was dreaming to think she’d ever get him to see things from her point of view.

“You guys are so technologically advanced and yet your attitudes are stuck back in the dark ages. I’m not keeping your house, buddy. I have a brain. I have ambition. I’m not ever gonna be the little housewife, barefoot and pregnant, cooking your dinners and having the slippers and pipe ready for when you get home.”

She’d escaped that life and had no plans to go back to it. Although even she knew that Que’s version of that life would be far better than the one that she’d been destined for. Jerry never cared one bit about whether or not she’d wanted to be touched. He touched her whenever he liked, and she had been powerless, unable to fight him.

“There is no need to be barefoot. I can afford shoes.”

Really? That’s what he was taking from what she’d just said to him? “Are you sure that’s the only thing you want to comment on?”

He shook his head. “And the autocooker makes our dinners. I have no need for slippers. It never grows that cold here. And I do not know why I would need a pipe. But the pregnant part is very doable.”

He grinned, and something stabbed at her chest, hard and sharp. Because she could totally see little babies with his dark blue eyes. Nope. Not happening.

She took in a deep breath. She needed to end this conversation. Now.

“You need to leave me alone. I mean it. Don’t follow me anymore. Don’t talk to me. Just leave me alone.”

He frowned, opening his mouth, but she turned and
practically ran off. Keely didn’t like to run, wasn’t really that fond of any sort of exercise. But right now, she needed to get away from him as fast as she could.

Que watched her go in confusion.

One moment they were talking, the next she was running off. He shook his head. These human females were difficult. And hard to understand. He never thought to take a mate who might argue with him. He always thought to have a quiet mate, one who would obey him without question.

He wondered what his chances were of getting Keely to obey him without argument. If their past interactions were any indication, it was highly unlikely.

He followed at a discreet distance. Just because she had stormed off, did not mean he was not going to continue to protect her.

Once he had her bound to him for good, he was certain they could work out any issues. All she needed to do was learn to obey him in all things.

  Simple.

Except the tight feeling in his stomach told him it would be anything but. Why couldn’t his mate have been more like Ellie? She was softer, gentler, and he doubted she ever argued with Racar. He sighed, shaking his head. Ellie was not his mate. Keely was. And she was filled with temper and energy. She wasn’t afraid to tell him no.

It was unfathomable. He was supposed to be in charge. To lead the way. To protect. To take care of her. Yet, she would rather work herself into exhaustion and walk around without anyone watching over her.

Yes, things would change after they were mated.

It was taking all of his control not to try to bind her to him. But what he told her was true. He would not touch her without her permission. If she was one of the females on the ships that arrived regularly from Earth, that would be different. Much touching happened at those mixers between unmated Zerconian males and the human females, because they were here looking for mates.
