My Sister's Husband Page 28

by Marsh, Nicola

“You have no idea what it did to me in here,” he presses a fist to his heart, “when I saw you and Hope together. You’re a natural and she gravitates toward you…”

  He shakes his head, his expression tortured. “It gutted me to know the truth and be so damn helpless to do anything about it. Until that night on the cliff.”

  I stiffen, every muscle in my body clenching.

  Has Riker just admitted to murdering Freya?

  Those last few moments before she fell are a blur. We were grappling, I lost my footing, Riker was there, but I thought Freya was already pitching over the cliff. I thought it had been momentum.

  Was it something more sinister?

  I want to believe this man is inherently good, that everything he’s done has been for Hope, that he loves our daughter as much as I do.

  But in that moment, I wonder if he’s as good a liar as the rest of us.

  As he envelops me in his arms, I know I’ll always have doubts about him. And after learning the truth about Aunt Alice and Freya, I’ll have trouble trusting anyone again.

  But I can do this.

  Hope is depending on me.

  It’s time to step up for my daughter.

  My daughter.

  I don’t know what the future holds, but if I ever have a child again I hope it’s a boy so a girl won’t have to contend with a sister.

  Some of the girls in my family don’t have a great track record with sisterhood.

  The Scandal

  My life is like one of those cheap snow globes my twins collected when they were younger. Shiny and pretty on the outside, blurred beyond recognition when shaken.

  * * *

  Ever since her twin girls left home, Marisa has felt there’s something missing from her life. Her sprawling mansion is no longer filled with laughter and chaos, and she’s desperate to feel needed… and to be distracted from the secret she’s been hiding from her husband for all these years.

  * * *

  Coffee with her best friends might be the only thing holding Marisa together. But Claire and Elly have their own secrets. Like why Claire hasn’t been to work in weeks, or why Elly won’t tell anyone who’s buying her flowers.

  * * *

  When Jodi, a pregnant young girl, turns up at Marisa’s doorstep, Marisa is quick to come to her aid. She sees herself in Jodi and she knows how devoting yourself to looking after others can take up all your time in the most marvellous way.

  * * *

  But Jodi’s arrival quickly pushes everyone’s lies to the surface. The father of her unborn child is someone the women know very well, and Marisa starts to wonder if her obsession with helping Jodi might come at a devastating price…

  The Scandal has a twist that will take your breath away. An emotionally charged novel about secrets, affairs and perfect small towns from USA Today bestseller Nicola Marsh that will be devoured by fans of Kerry Fisher, Big Little Lies and The Other Woman.

  Writing is such a wonderful job and none more so than when the glimmer of an idea pops into my head and develops into a full-blown story I can’t wait to tell.

  I know this sounds crazy but I wrote My Sister’s Husband in eighteen days.

  Insane, right? But I couldn’t stop the words pouring onto the page as Brooke, Freya and Alice demanded to have their stories told.

  I had so much fun bringing these characters to life and if you loved My Sister’s Husband I’d be grateful if you could write a review. Even a few simple words of appreciation makes such a difference helping new readers to discover my books for the first time so please take the time to leave a review.

  I love hearing from my readers – you can get in touch via my Facebook page, Instagram, Twitter, Goodreads and my website.

  The Last Wife

  Trusting his family was her first mistake.

  * * *

  When Ria married Grayson, she worried she would never fit in with the Parkers, her glamorous sisters-in-law or the exclusive picture-perfect Chicago parties her mother-in-law throws. But Grayson said they could create their own family, and when their daughter Shelley was born, Ria finally had the life she had always dreamed of when she was growing up in foster care.

  * * *

  Everything changed when Grayson disappeared.

  * * *

  Until one morning, Grayson leaves the house for work and never comes home. Left to raise Shelley alone, Ria is forced to turn to her husband’s family, to let her mother-in-law into her life, allow her to babysit Shelley, and accept her financial support. She tries to ignore the feeling that her sisters-in-law never thought she was good enough. They say they have no idea what happened to Grayson, and she tries very hard to believe them.

  * * *

  But Ria is about to learn that every Parker wife has secrets.

  * * *

  And protecting her daughter might come at a terrible price…

  * * *

  Utterly compelling, The Last Wife is an emotionally-charged novel about what one woman will do to survive. Perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty, Kerry Fisher and The Other Woman.

  Acknowledgments

  Having a book published is rarely a solo effort so thanks to the following people:

  Jennifer Hunt, my fabulous editor at Bookouture. You make the process of draft to print seamless and your insightful edits push me to get the best out of every story. Thank you so much!

  Noelle Holten and Kim Nash, publicist extraordinaires, who put their heart and soul into marketing every book. Thanks for getting my books into readers’ hands.

  The entire team at Bookouture, I love your transparency, your dedication and your passion for books. I’m grateful for my domestic suspense novels to be published with you.

  Kim Lionetti, my agent, who supports me through every book.

  Soraya Lane and Natalie Anderson, my writing champions, who keep me focused on the next big idea.

  My parents, for not giving me a sister like the twisted ones portrayed in this story!

  Martin, who thinks everything I write is gold. Your support is invaluable.

  My beautiful boys, who fill my heart with love. You’re the reason I strive harder with every book.

  For the bloggers and reviewers who take the time to read my books and spread the love. I appreciate all you do. A special shout-out to Marnie Harrison, who read The Scandal, my first foray into the domestic suspense genre, and told the world how it kept her up all night reading. And for making a video about it when she never does! Marnie, it’s always nerve-racking for an author waiting for that first review, especially in a new genre, so your kind words about my book really helped. />
  My loyal readers, thanks for buying my books. Each purchase enables me to keep writing more stories I get to share with you, so thank you!

  We – both author and publisher – hope you enjoyed this book. We believe that you can become a reader at any time in your life, but we’d love your help to give the next generation a head start.

  We’d love you to get involved by sharing, borrowing, reading, buying or talking about a book with a child in your life and spreading the love of reading. We want to make sure the next generation continues to have access to books, wherever they come from.
