It was amusing, watching the big, tough, bikers fawn over the little baby. They’d all been willing to kill for her a couple months ago. Some of them had. And yet they stood there, cooing at the little girl, making her wriggle in Griffin’s arms. They weren’t the monsters the news and movies made them out to be. They were just outcasts, shunned by society. But they were still good people.
Doc came back shortly, handing Rachel a piece of paper. Her eyes went wide as she read it. Not only was the baby’s name listed, but the mother’s name was listed as Ella Sanders. Though she’d already made the decision to take that name and identity, it hadn’t hit her until right then what it meant. This would be her new life.
But what really surprised her was the name written in the space for the father. Griffin Crawford. That meant, legally, Griffin would really be Elizabeth’s father. Gabriel’s family would never be able to get their hooks into her. With Shakespeare on their side, she and Elizabeth could hide forever. Gabriel’s legacy would die with him, and Elizabeth would be free from all of that.
“Thank you,” Rachel said to Doc, wiping away tears. She’d never had a baby shower, hadn’t gotten gifts thrown at her by all of her friends like she’d planned. But this was so much better. No car seat or cute onesies could ever compare.
When she showed the paper to Griffin, she thought he might pass out. Apparently, he hadn’t known about Doc’s plan. She could only imagine how many strings he would have to pull to get it done on the official document, but they would both be eternally grateful.
Makenna even stopped by for a quick visit. She walked with a slight limp, using a cane to help her, but otherwise she looked good as new.
“They’ve got me on light duty,” Makenna said as she wiggled her fingers in front of the baby. “Still in the ER, but maybe I should switch over to the maternity ward. I could use a bit of happiness for a change.” Her eyes sparkled as she spoke, and Rachel doubted she’d ever leave the ER. She’d been through hell too, but Makenna had endured. She wouldn’t give up, wouldn’t let Gabriel dictate her future.
And neither would Rachel.
She glanced up at her daughter. No, Rachel was dead. Rachel’s life had been full of fear, of pain, of violence. That was all over with now.
She was Ella Sanders now. She was a mother now. She was Shakespeare’s old lady.
The past could stay in the past. She had something to live for. She had hope in her life, something she’d only ever dreamed of. Now she had the chance to make that dream come true.
