It’s an event that I always had a hard time contextualizing. Were we really in danger? Was it just a taste of adventure in what was ultimately more of an inconvenient situation than a full-on disaster? There were maybe only one or two moments I was actually frightened over the course of the twelve-hour ordeal, and the moment that was by far the most terrifying was when I almost got exploded, which happened after we were rescued and was mostly my fault.
Recently, I reconnected with Jono, who’s still a good friend of my sister. We hadn’t talked in years, and pretty quickly after we saw each other, we started reminiscing about the camping trip. I told him how even though it was scary, I didn’t feel like we were ever in any real danger, because he and the other counselors didn’t seem that stressed out. Nobody did.
Jono: Really? That’s not true at all. I was stressed as fuck. It completely traumatized me. It was one of the worst things that ever happened to me. I was 100 percent sure we were all gonna die out there.
Me: Yeah, but, when you think about it, it’s still kind of a funny story, isn’t it?
Jono: Nope…not at all.
