  Chapter 12

  War Letters

  Letters.. They became disproportionately important to me during the war years, especially those from West and Alma. I have them here before me, so often read that sections of them speak to me from memory. Once, I fancied that I could feel in the paper the touch of her hands, hear from the ink the sound of his voice. But my own fingers and eyes in their seeking have obliterated these fragile ghosts.

  Other considerations apart, the letters contain a chronology of those years, which is why I read them now once again.
