Flynn nodded.
Strong took the call, listened asked if the caller was sure, thanked him, then ended the call. “Davidson is a match for the samples recovered from Claire Hobson’s body,” he announced.
“That’s good,” Flynn responded. “Now I’m sure you all have plenty of paperwork to deal with to wrap all this up, so I’ll let you get on,” he said in dismissal.
Strong was last to exit.
“Oh, just a minute, Colin,” he said. Standing up and walking round his desk. “Just close the door for a second, would you.”
Strong did as asked and turned to face the DCS.
“I just thought I’d tell you, Mellor is extremely pleased.”
“I’ll bet he is.”
“No, with you, Colin … and the team.”
“That’s good, I’ll tell them.”
“You know Hemingford has gone permanently now and we need an experienced DCI.”
Strong gave a slight nod.
“Mellor wants you in post,” Flynn said.
Strong knew something like this was coming but was still smarting from last year’s events. “And then, after a year or so in an Acting role, you bring someone else in like last time,” he retorted.
“This wouldn’t be an Acting position. This would be permanent.” Flynn leaned in closer. “So, come on, Colin, what do you say?”
