An iron fist seems to suddenly grip my heart and squeezes hard. “What if…? What if he hates me?”
“No way, Elle. I don’t believe that, not in a hundred years. He knows what the system does; he knows how it pulled you apart. He was old enough to remember you coming and finding him, against all odds.” Connor moves the strands of hair that have fallen over my face. “And now, here you are, finding him again. Keeping your promise to him.”
The wall breaks and I sob. Connor holds me for a long time.
“How can I be so happy?”
“You deserve it. You had a lifetime of shit. It’s time to turn it all around.”
“I’m scared,” I confess.
“You’re excited. The adrenaline comes from the same place.”
“What time is it in Arkansas?”
“The same time it is here in Minnesota.”
A hysterical laugh escapes my chest. “Do you think—?”
“A teenage boy would be up at ten o’clock on Christmas Eve?” He gives me a cute, duh of course glance. “Go on.”
“Okay.” I get up. “But tomorrow, we’ve got so much to do.”
“I got your back.” He smiles, and I remember when I used to watch him spar in the ring at The Core. I am My Brother’s Keeper.
“I know you do. And I’ve got yours right back,” I assure him.
Connor comes over and pulls me into a kiss. “Baby, my goal is to make your life magical.”
“You already have, Connor. You already have.”
