Glossary
Begum - colloquially used to denote a married muslim woman
Bhai - literally brother, but also added to the end of names
Burqa - a long, loose garment covering the whole body from head to feet, worn in public by women in many Muslim countries
Chai - Indian tea
Duppata - a length of material worn arranged in two folds over the chest and thrown back around the shoulders, typically with a salwar kameez
Jaanu/jaan - my love
Jai Gurudev - Hail to the Guru
Ji - used with names to denote respect. Sometimes used as a respectful “yes”
Kannada - local language of the state of Karnataka
Kurta - a loose and long collarless shirt
Paisa - money
Sadhu - a holy man or ascetic
Subedar - In the National Security Guard (NSG Commandos), otherwise known as the “Black Cats” the rank of Subedar is a Junior Commissioned Officer
