Through Thick and Thin Page 16

by J. P. Oliver

Travis was going to murder Davis. Lance went stiff, and then slowly, painfully slowly, turned around to glare at Travis.

Travis put his hands up, as if that was somehow going to shield him from Lance’s wrath. “Luke and Adam told me yesterday. I completely forgot with getting back to you and apologizing and all of that.”

Lance leaned into him. “You are so lucky that I’m in love with you or I would kick your ass to kingdom come,” he hissed.

Travis sincerely doubted that, but he winked at Lance anyway.

“Right,” Luke said, looking at the notebook. “So, everyone owes Adam. Matthew owes me because it wasn’t over a football game… but I can just cancel your bar tab. Everyone except for Jake owes Matthew for the sign since it did help speed up the process, Davis owes Jake an additional twenty bucks for property damage being involved…”

“Okay, c’mon, how was I supposed to know that his house would catch fire?” Davis argued.

“It’s Travis, of course there was going to be some kind of property damage involved,” Jake replied. “Pay up.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Lance said. “I think you guys should give us some of this cash, since we apparently helped you all to earn it.”

  Everyone looked at each other.

“Seems fair,” Adam said. He started to divide some of the huge lump of money he’d accumulated as everyone began to hand him their wads of cash.

“Holy shit, how much were you guys betting?” Travis protested.

“We’ve literally been doing this since high school,” Luke told him. “It’s built up.”

Travis couldn’t help it. He laughed, bracing himself against the bar top. Everyone had been expecting them to get together since high school. Jesus, what even was his life?

Lance fitted himself in against Travis’s side, resting his head on his shoulder. “I suppose that went as well as we could have expected,” he said, smiling.

And Travis was thinking of all of it—the two of them, and their friends and what was still to come when he said, “Better than expected.”
