“Darling, am I dating anyone else?” I asked before carefully picking him up bridal style and carrying him to the couch. He wrapped his arms around my neck, nuzzling against my new beard. He loved it, but I only grew it out for my Tom cat.
I placed him gently on the couch and wrapped a few blankets around him to make a little cocoon, how he always liked to be when we watched movies. It was a little awkward for him to lean up against me, but I could still feel his shoulder through the blankets. That was good enough for me.
We watched one of those little children’s movies that Tom was obsessed with. Studio Ghibli, if I remembered correctly. Something about a large grey creature who used a leaf as an umbrella. I had to feed him most of his food through the hole in his blanket, but that wasn't an inconvenience.
“Are you happy in there?” I smiled.
Tom sniffled from watching the movie. “You have no idea.” He yanked the blanket down and leapt at me. His lips crashed against mine, his body warm and inviting through the blankets.
“I love you,” he whispered. “I love you so fucking much, Jack.”
I held his cheek in my palm. “I love you more.”
I loved my son. And Scott was an amazing friend. But Tom, he was my world. He was more than I’d could have ever imagined and just being able to take care of Tom was good enough for me.
