The courtroom door slammed open and Buddy ran up the aisle stopping at the railing.
The judge looked up as he stood there. “Young man, I expect the proper decorum in my courtroom,” the Judge said firmly.
“Yes, sir.”
“What do you want?” the judge asked impatiently.
“I have a message for Marnie. I mean Ms. Winters.”
“Well, what is it?” he yelled out.
“You want me to say it out loud?” Buddy asked looking around the courtroom and saw the look on Marnie’s face. He didn’t know if she wanted to faint or kick his ass.
“Young man, state your business so I can get back to court business,” the judge bellowed again.
Buddy swallowed loudly. “The babies are coming.”
“Whose babies?” the judge asked.
“Mine, Your Honor,” Marnie said weakly and watched as Sandra Marks stepped into the courtroom.
“What the hell is going on Mrs. District Attorney?” the judge asked as his face turned beet red.
“I’m here to take over the case for Ms. Winters. Her wife just went into labor.”
“This is highly inappropriate, Mrs. Marks.”
“I realize that, Your Honor.”
“Do you have any objections, Mr. Harris?” the judge asked the defense attorney and saw the slight grin on his mouth.
“Yes, Judge. I would rather the proceedings be postponed until the Assistant DA is available.”
“Of course you would.” His eyes bore into Marnie, but then his eyes softened and his face became calm. “Go be with your wife, Ms. Winters. The trial will be postponed until…” he looked at the calendar, “June 15th. Is that acceptable, Ms. Winters?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Mr. Harris?” The defense attorney was ready to object, but the judge didn’t give him the chance. “Good.” He banged his gavel. “Court adjourned.”
“Go, Marnie,” Sandra said. “I’ll get your things and leave them in your office.
“Thanks, Sandra.” Marnie ran out of the courtroom with Buddy at her side. Once they were in Buddy’s truck, she asked, “When did she go into labor?”
Buddy looked at his watch. “About an hour ago. Her mom took her to the hospital.”
She clasped her hand on his shoulder. “Thanks for coming to get me.” Marnie thought back to her conversation with Leslie when they found out they were having a boy and a girl. “I’d like to name our son after Buddy because if it wasn’t for his carelessness, I never would have met you.” She sighed. “I’m just not sure I want our son to be called Buddy.”
Leslie chuckled. “Buddy isn’t his real name. Everyone started calling him that because he was named after his dad.” She now smiled at Marnie and took her hand. “His name is Spencer.”
“Spencer.” Marnie raised an eyebrow. “I like it. What do you think?”
“I think it’s perfect, Marnie.” Leslie kissed Marnie’s cheek and patted her stomach. “Do you hear us, Spencer? Your moms can’t wait to see you.”
“Buddy, Leslie and I are having a boy and a girl. We’re naming our son, Spencer. If that’s okay with you?”
Buddy’s head snapped to Marnie. “Really? You want to name him after me?”
“Buddy, if it wasn’t for you,” Marnie laughed, “I never would have met Leslie and I wouldn’t be the happiest woman in the world.” Her arm went to his shoulder and she squeezed it softly. “We also want you to be his godfather.” Marnie watched as Buddy wiped a tear off his cheek. “What do you think?”
“I think it’s great, Marnie.” They pulled up to the hospital and he let Marnie out.
“Thank you for driving me, Spencer,” she said with a wink and a smile.
“I’ll be upstairs after I park the truck,” he said smiling proudly.
“It could be awhile.”
“I know, but my namesake is about to be born. I’ll be upstairs waiting with the other folks.”
Marnie got out of the truck and ran inside. She got off the elevator on the maternity floor and saw family and friends in the waiting room.
Alan called out as she slowed down, “Rachel is with her.”
Marnie rushed to the room and didn’t stop until she stood next to Leslie. “I’m sorry I’m late.”
“You’re here now and that’s all that matters.” Leslie pulled her down for a kiss.
“How do you feel?” she asked squeezing her hand.
“They gave me an epidural already, so not too bad.”
“She waited to call me,” Rachel said standing on the other side of the bed. Marnie raised her eyebrows.
“I thought I could wait until you got home, but the pain got so bad.”
“I’m so sorry Leslie, that I wasn’t there for you,” Marnie said softly.
“Honey, the babies are two weeks early. You couldn’t have known.”
They both watched as another contraction showed up on the machine. “Did that hurt?”
“Just a little pressure, but that’s all.” She squeezed Marnie’s hand. “I guess Buddy found you?”
“Yeah, the judge wasn’t too happy that he interrupted his courtroom,” she said chuckling.
“Did you tell him?” Leslie asked touching Marnie’s cheek.
Marnie nodded and smiled. “He is probably in the waiting room now with the rest of our family and friends.”
“You should call your parents.”
“I will once the babies are here.” She laughed. “You know they will be on a plane tomorrow.”
Leslie grinned. “I have no doubt of that.”
It had been two hours and still no babies. “How are you feeling?” Marnie asked taking her wife’s hand.
“Tired, that’s all. Why don’t you pull that chair closer and relax. I have a feeling we are going to be here a very long time.”
The doctor walked in and checked her dilation. “I think in the next couple of hours you will have your babies,” he said pulling off the latex gloves.
“Thanks, doctor,” Marnie said taking her seat, but she made sure she had Leslie’s hand. Her eyes closed and she thought about what it had taken to get to this point. They both had gone through the series of shots in order to retrieve eggs from them both. The donor they chose had light brown hair and blue eyes. His height was well over six feet and he was musically inclined. Fertilized eggs from both women had been implanted in Leslie and they had no idea if it was Leslie or Marnie’s eggs that had taken.
Marnie was brought out of her sleep by a tight squeeze of her hand. She sat up quickly. “Are you okay, Leslie?” she asked standing.
“The babies are coming. I didn’t want you to miss the main event,” Leslie said as her brow began to glisten.
Marnie leaned over the rail and kissed Leslie’s lips softly. “Thank you for doing this for us.”
“You helped too.”
“Push, Leslie. Keep pushing,” the doctor said.
Marnie let go of Leslie’s hand and took a peek where the doctor was sitting. “I can see the head,” Marnie said turning to Leslie.
“One more hard push and the baby will be out,” the doctor said.
As the baby slid out into the doctor’s hands, he said, “Here is your boy.”
Marnie rushed back to Leslie and kissed her forehead. “He’s beautiful, honey.”
“Let me see,” Leslie insisted, trying to sit up. The baby was laid on Leslie’s stomach and the baby let out a cry. She counted the fingers and toes. “All there,” she said touching his leg. “Look, he has your blond hair.” Leslie looked up into Marnie’s eyes and saw the tears as they formed.
Marnie cut the umbilical cord as the doctor had explained, and then he was taken away to be cleaned.
“Are you ready to see your daughter?” the doctor asked the women.
“Yes,” they both said in unison.
“Push, Leslie,” the doctor instructed again.
The little girl came out screaming and they both looked at each other and giggled. This t
ime it was Marnie to say, “She has your hair, honey.” Marnie couldn’t help herself and kissed Leslie thoroughly. She didn’t care who was watching.
The babies were now placed in Leslie’s arms. Marnie cried openly now seeing her two children with her wife. The babies opened their eyes. “They both have blue eyes.”
“I don’t care what color they are as long as they are healthy,” Leslie said looking down at her children. “Do you want to hold one?”
“Yes.” Marnie took some pictures with her phone so she could send it to her parents, sister and Sheila in New York.
As the babies were taken from the room, Leslie suggested, “Why don’t you go out and tell our family. Then they could go to the nursery to see our babies. She looked at Marnie with tears in her eyes. “I love you so much.”
“I love you too.” She bent down and kissed her lips. “Get some rest while I’m gone.” Marnie watched as Leslie’s eyes closed before she was out the door. The moment Marnie stepped into the waiting room, the family and friends surrounded her.
“So?” Rachel asked.
“Spencer and Sara are here and Leslie is sleeping right now.”
“Tell us their weight,” Dot requested.
“Spencer weighed seven pounds four ounces and Sara weighed seven pounds one ounce. Spencer arrived at seven-thirty and Sara at seven-forty.” The smile was plastered to Marnie’s face as everyone gave her a hug. “They should be in the nursery by now. Why don’t you go see them and then come see Leslie.” Marnie sat down and sent her family a text with the babies’ pictures before returning to the room.
“Were they happy?” Leslie asked when Marnie came back into the room.
“Happy? Ecstatic,” Marnie said grinning. “How are you feeling?”
“Sore, but wonderful.” Her smile was radiant. “Come over here.”
Marnie put the bar down on one side of the bed and climbed in next to her wife. “Did I tell you today how happy you make me?”
Leslie laughed. “No, not today. I am so happy that you got stuck in Waterville.”
“Me too, love. Me too.” They sealed their happiness with a deep kiss.
