Agatha stood by her vehicle at the entrance to the city that Quintus had once controlled. ‘This used to be part of the city, but we gave it over to Quintus because it had the right controls to keep him in place.’
‘Except he used it to grow his empire,’ said Anya.
‘We couldn’t have foreseen he’d find a way around our controls.’
‘Where there’s a will, there’s always a way,’ said Dom.
Agatha nodded, as if she was done explaining. ‘What will you two do now?’
Dom looked at Anya.
There was only one place she wanted to go. ‘We have somewhere to be. We’ll see you soon.’
Agatha nodded and climbed into her car. The driver returned her to the city side.
Anya took Dom’s hand. ‘You ready?’
He nodded and they got into a vehicle Agatha had given them.
Anya’s nerves hit her as they approached the entrance to Brookfield. The last time she’d been here the place had been emptied out. Copies from Praesidium had taken her and the other residents to Essention. Now, the town buzzed with new life. Those who’d been ousted had returned to begin anew. In the distance, several new vertical farms were being built, just beyond the perimeter of the towns. Brookfield would be responsible for the collective farms, reporting to a Praesidium under new management. Other towns would be responsible for their own farms. The Region had lots of space and plenty of room to grow.
She approached her old cottage on foot. She hadn’t seen it in nearly five months and thought she’d never see it again.
Anya opened the door; it squeaked and a lump rose to her throat. She wished Jason were here, to see things play out for the better.
Dom slid his hands around her waist and nestled his chin on her shoulder. ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’
She nodded against him, then stepped forward. He released her but kept hold of her hand. The first thing she saw was the dried blood on the floor. Anya turned away from the spot where her parents had been killed, from where she and Jason had collapsed with radiation sickness. She took a deep breath and released Dom, walking farther into her former home. Dom closed the door behind them.
The red sofa made her smile. Many evenings had been spent there playing games as a family. She no longer hated her mother. Both her parents had been trying to keep her safe. She wondered if they’d regained their memories of what Quintus was and why he’d been locked up in the first place.
Dom stayed by the door. She returned to him and grabbed his hand, pulling him into each room. She showed him the kitchen, where Jason used to sit for hours and do his electronic work. Then into the bedroom—hers—with the primrose-painted walls and the marks on the floor close to the hidden space behind the wall.
Dom was quiet behind her. She turned and wrapped her arms around his waist. ‘I miss them.’
He stroked her hair. ‘I miss my mother.’
She looked up at him. ‘Do you want to visit your house next?’
‘That’s not home for me anymore. Is this place home for you?’
Breathing deeply, Anya looked around. ‘More than our apartment is.’
Dom took both her hands and led her back to the living room. ‘If we push the sofas back, we can fit a dining table in here.’
Her eyes widened and her pulse raced. ‘What are you saying?’
‘I’d like to do some good in the Region. But I don’t want any of it unless you’re with me.’
Anya rested her cheek on his chest. ‘I can feel my family here.’
‘So it’s settled then.’
She smiled into his shirt. They were home.

Thank you for reading THE BEYOND. I hope you enjoyed it.
While this might seem like the end, it’s not. I’m planning a pre-Region story to close out this series that I hope will be a fitting end to Anya’s story. And after, who knows? I would love to write a few pre-Region stories for some characters. Let me know if you have any characters you’d love to hear more from.

Word from the Author
The final book is here! Quintus has been stopped and it looks like the gang will get back to living life instead of fighting for it. But I’m not ready to say goodbye to this series yet. There will be another book, set in the time before the Region.
This cover is super cool. As usual, the team at Deranged Doctor Design have nailed the idea I gave them. My editor, Sara, is brilliant to work with and a champion for this series. Love to the launch gang for reviewing the book for me. Special mention to Jessica for beta reading the book.
It’s been a strange year for everyone, but for me writing has kept me sane and busy. I hope my books gave you that escapism we really needed this year. No negative thoughts. Vaccines are coming. We will be returning to normality soon—whatever that looks like for you. And I hope we’ll appreciate the little things more, like making connections that matter and discarding anything that no longer works.
As always, drop me a line, even if it’s only to say hi.
Oh, and reviews: hate writing ‘em, lov
e getting ‘em. If you decide to leave one, thank you.
Love and peace.

Eliza Green tried her hand at fashion designing, massage, painting, and even ghost hunting, before finding her love of writing. She often wonders if her desire to change the ending of a particular glittery vampire story steered her in that direction (it did). After earning her degree in marketing, Eliza went on to work in everything but marketing, but swears she uses it in everyday life, or so she tells her bank manager.
Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, she lives there with her sci-fi loving, evil genius best friend. When not working on her next amazing science fiction adventure, you can find her reading, indulging in new food at an amazing restaurant or simply singing along to something with a half decent beat.
