Skye shook her head. “So far, nothing. But we’ll keep sending out inquiries to Canada and surrounding states to see if the Jane Doe fits anyone they have that we don’t.”
“Then you already know that Giles thinks the girls were kidnapped, held for several days, maybe even for months, at Jurgen’s cabin, and then murdered there.”
“Giles and I talked about it this morning,” Skye admitted. “Her first name is Sara, by the way. Nice woman. I’m trying to lure her away from San Francisco. The county could use a woman like that with her expertise. Anyway, Sara told me the girls died and buried with ligatures still wrapped around their wrists. She’s still working on identifying the rest of the bodies found in dumpsite one and dumpsite two. It’s a massive job. I think there are still eight men unidentified. That’s not including the Jane Doe from Jurgen’s cabin.”
“We also talked to Foley,” Josh said. “Foley theorizes that these women found near his cabin were the ones he killed for himself, kept for himself. In other words, no one paid Jurgen to kill them; he did it because he wanted to do it.”
“Which brings an even darker evil to a rightful end,” Skye noted. “We may never know exactly how many people he murdered since coming here to the Northwest.”
Harry nibbled on a potato chip. “I can verify that Interpol is delighted with the news that he’s dead. Just like Jenny, they feel he was a danger wherever he lived. Although they did ask for confirmation that we got the right guy.”
Skye let out a loud sigh. “Sara’s taking care of that with DNA because I wanted confirmation as well.”
“Food’s ready,” Reggie hollered. “Come and get it.”
Josh watched everyone else scuttle off the porch and make their way toward the picnic tables decked out with bright tablecloths and napkins. Judy and Jenny passed around the side dishes. Sierra scampered over when she saw Zoe dishing out macaroni and cheese.
It was all so normal, so dull.
Josh captured Skye’s hand in his, brought it up to his lips to place a kiss on the palm. “We make a good team, don’t we?”
Looking out at the end-of-day sunshine beginning to tip the horizon with shades of crimson and garnet, she wrapped her arms around his waist.
Her eyes wandered to the people she loved. “We do. That’s because this is our family, Josh. Every single one of them sitting at that table would walk over hot coats for the other.”
She’d no sooner gotten the words out of her mouth when an argument ensued about who brought the best potato salad.
Shaking her head, she smiled up at Josh, then tugged him down the steps. “Come on. It’s time to referee again.”
