by Sammie Joyce

“Every group has its issues,” I told him. “Rabbits overpopulate, cockroaches, coyotes to name a few. The answer is not to cull them, despite what humans might think. The answer is to spread them out. I don’t dispute that there is a problem but it’s not one with a cut and dry solution.”

  “Yes,” Ruben conceded. “You’re right.”

My cottage appeared but I stopped walking to peer at him, cocking my head slightly to the side as I studied his face in confusion.

“I don’t understand you,” I said. “I mean, you did a complete one eighty on the subject. How? Why?”

“I didn’t do a one eighty,” he replied, meeting my eyes with a bemused expression on his face. “But I have changed my view.”

I stared at him expectantly, waiting for him to elaborate. He seemed to be searching for the right words.

“I still think there is work to be done to save us and our resources,” he explained. “But perhaps not by ending procreation.”

I gave him a half-smile, feeling a flutter of warmth flow through me.

“No?” I asked innocently. “Why not?”

The smile filled his face as he stepped closer to envelop me in his arms, the love in his face unlike anything I’d ever seen in my life before.

“Because over this last month, all I can think about is having babies with you,” he breathed, causing gooseflesh to explode over my skin in a rush of pleasure. “Because hearing Emmett’s proclamation of love for Kea made me understand exactly how I feel about you, and I would never want to deprive anyone of that feeling, human or shifter.”

Our eyes met and above our heads, the Northern Lights continued their mystical dance. When our lips met this time, I silently enacted a silent spell, closing my eyes to allow the phenomenon’s tendrils to reach down as they had for Kea, tickling at us to draw us skyward as I lost myself in his lips.

It wasn’t until we were back on firm ground again, outside my cottage that our mouths parted and we stared at one another.

“Now what?” Ruben asked, brushing a stray strand of hair away from my face.

  “What do you mean?”

“I mean, we’re not off chasing artifacts or turning humans into shifters. Now what will we do with ourselves?”

I laughed and pulled him toward the house, my arm looped through his.

“Why don’t we start with staying in bed for the next week and consider never opening the door again.”

“Yes,” he sighed. “That’s the kind of life I could get used to.”

Book One - Alpha Protector Council Series

  Sammie Joyce

Inigo Matthis is a wolf shifter and one of the Alpha Protectors in the shifter community. He’s also a lawyer in Eugene and a good one at that. In fact, he’s a shark in the courtroom and highly sought after by those who need his services.

He doesn’t hate the humans the way the older shifters and the Council do. In fact, he envies their freedom, their lives that they don’t have to share with an animal inside them. And he finds the women gentle and attractive rather than weak because of their lack of power.

But he’s serious about his position on the team and he doesn’t want to jeopardize what he has. He has good friends there and he’s gained respect through the years he’s worked his way up onto the team.

When people start disappearing or turning up injured through animal attacks, Inigo and the rest of the Protectors are worried. Is it one of their own that’s causing trouble? Or is it a rogue shifter from out of town? The injuries will blow their cover and they need to stop what’s happening.

Brandy Clark can’t sleep. She’s not sure what woke her or what she feels. The night has a strange quality and she feels stifled at home. She decides to get out. Once she’s away from home, logic hits and she decides she might as well grab milk since they’re out of it. She stops into a twenty-four hour convenience store. Before she can go in, she realizes she’s come up on a fight between two men. It’s messy and aggressive and hot as hell. The whole scene is laced with danger and it draws her in.

After the fight is over and one of the men leaves, she meets Inigo and he’s the epitome of danger. She’s drawn to it, but she knows she can’t get involved with this man. She has a stable life and she needs to keep it that way. The encounter is filled with a power that she can feel but can’t place and the sexual attraction is instant. She’s a little frightened, a lot attracted to what looks like the most alpha man she’s ever seen, and certain she must never see him again.
