Mad Dog Page 18

by Andrew Beery

Damage received earlier in the day had forced the chief engineer of this seventh ship to shut down its drive systems a scant fifteen minutes earlier. No longer accelerating it soon fell behind its ill-fated brethren. The force of the explosion has seriously tested its shields, but it survived to witness the final destruction of a fleet once sixteen ships strong.

General Ahithophel watched as the dust that had been six of his ships slowly dispersed into the blackness of space. He felt the heat of fury in his cheeks. His opponent had found a way to seemly strike from the grave. Such contempt for the master could not be tolerated. There was a debt to be paid... and he would extract payment for that debt in flesh once his remaining twelve hundred shock troops reached the planet called Earth.

Commander Whiskers McGraw whistled. The team he had assembled on the far side of the moon to examine the machine the J’ni had built grew by the hour. Admiral Spratt had requisitioned over a dozen scientists and an equal number of specialists to work with him. Earth wanted to know what this machine was, and did they need to fear it. I his mind that was a silly question. Anything as powerful as this beastie was… was something to be feared. Still, fire was something to be feared… but it was also very useful. Whiskers had a feeling the same was going to be true for this… this… great machine.

And what a machine it was! The level of the technology was astounding. As impressive as the Galactic Order tech had been… this was orders of magnitude more advanced. It was most certainly a weapon, but it was so much more.

It seemed to draw energy from the moon’s mantle directly… and it was using that energy. It was growing. At first, this had been a source of concern. That assessment changed quickly.

Hours earlier, the great machine had powered up on its own. Gently strobing lights guided the Engineer and his team deeper into the complex that was the machine. The lights guided them down a set of corridors that seems to gradually spiral downward.

Several levels below the entrance a series of rooms were discovered. Machines the likes of which Whiskers had never seen continued to excavate even more chambers. It was these first set of rooms however that seemed to be the place the great machine was guiding them to.

Somehow the rooms were outfitted with accommodations that seemed very human. Beds, tables, chairs… the whole works. Surprisingly, the accommodations also included a state-of-the-art medical center. It was not empty.

A lone figure lay on one of the beds. He was gravely wounded and was very likely dying. Before the engineer could call for help, the air filled with a familiar static electric field. There was a brief popping sound and the man’s wife… a gifted surgeon stood at the foot of his bed.

  Hunting Dog (v1)

It’s odd the way some things work out. You expect to wake up dead, and instead you wake up to the most beautiful face you’ve ever seen. Still, I was confused. I had died… or at least I sure as heck thought I had. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I’ve been alive for a number of years now and to be honest… I’m quite fond of it. I just didn’t understand ‘how’ I was alive.

My name is Fleet Admiral Jeremy Riker… but my friends call me Dog. This is the rest of my story.
