“So, what happens now?”
“I called Paul.” She looked down at her shoes. “I told him everything. I insisted he come back, if not for me, for the girls. He’s on the plane as we speak.”
“Do you think there’s a chance between you?”
“I don’t know.”
“Do you want there to be?”
“I don’t know that either.”
“And that’s okay.” Claire smiled. “Despite what people like my mother say, it’s not the be-all and end-all, right?”
“Right.” Sally looked over her shoulder and into the empty shop. “How do you feel about one last viewing before we sign the paperwork at the office tomorrow?”
“Sounds like the perfect plan.”
While Sally found the key on the cluttered chain, Claire turned and looked around the village square. Most of the shops were closed as usual on Sunday, but the beer garden in front of the pub was busier than ever.
In the sea of faces, a familiar one jumped out.
Ryan smiled and waved.
Claire smiled and waved back.
“Who’s that?” Sally asked after unlocking the door. “He’s cute.”
“I’ll tell you later.” Claire turned to the shop. “You’re never going to believe it.”
Standing in the middle of the shop, just like she had during her previous viewing, Claire imagined the candle shop as clear as day around her. She closed her eyes and inhaled, the dozens of different scents already thick in her nostrils. It might not have been how she imagined the dream coming true, but for the first time in her life, it was finally close enough to reach out and touch.
“Have you thought of a shop name yet?” Sally asked.
“Not yet.”
“How about Claire’s Candles?” Sally suggested, joining Claire in looking out of the window. “It’s simple, but I like it.”
“Claire’s Candles.” Claire closed her eyes again, absorbing the name. “I like it too.”
The road to opening the shop would be difficult, and the fight to make it work in the small village would be even harder, but Claire was ready for the challenge.
For the first time in her adult life, Claire Harris didn’t feel stuck, which made the future a dizzyingly exciting place to be heading.
