A Place to Call Home Page 23

by Jessica Berg

“She drives a hard bargain.” She tucked the blankets around Lilly, snapped off the lamp, and shut the door with a soft click.

“You know what I’ve been thinking about all day?” He backed her against the doorframe to their bedroom. His arms spanned around her, taking her prisoner.

“Was it about the amazing meatloaf I made for supper?”

“Nope.” His finger left a trail of heat along her collarbone.

“The fact we had our two hundredth guest today?”

“Nope.” His tongue followed where his finger had blazed a trail. “Congratulations, by the way.”

She bit back a moan. “Phoebe and Noah got engaged?”

His finger took a southern route, detouring every once in a while for a more circular scenic drive. “Poor man,” his words were muffled against a sensitive spot, igniting a fire low in her belly.

Desire licked through her veins, swirling and dancing toward her very center. “You’ll have to tell me then. The suspense is killing me.”

“It’s a pleasure, isn’t it?” His clever fingers explored, caressed, erased her clothes. He released her, only to back step her to the bed. “I was thinking about this time a year ago when I caught a certain redhead making out with my pillows.”

“I wasn’t making out with your pillows.” She bit his shoulder in injustice.

“Liar.” He swept her in his arms, deposited her in the middle of the bed, crawled over her, covered her.

  “You also kicked me out.”

“I was an idiot.” He nipped her ear lobe. “That’s never going to happen again.”

“Good. I happen to like your bed.” She slid her hands down, grasped his firm backside.

“You said you’d never make that mistake again.”

  “I lied.”

“Have any truths hanging around, waiting to be let loose?” He divested himself of his clothing, never taking his eyes off hers.

Her fingers caressed his light dusting of chest hair. Followed the trail downward. “I love you.”

“I love you more.” He spent the next hour or two proving how much.

  Afterword

I hope you enjoyed reading A Place to Call Home as much as I enjoyed writing it. I would be honored if you would leave an honest review on Amazon and/or your favorite book site. Reviews are crucial for any author and are often the life-blood of a story. Give Grace and Dominick the chance to share theirs and impact more readers.

Readers never give themselves enough credit. You are the stars of the show, you are the reason us crazy writers even put pen to paper, or should I say, fingers to the keyboard. So to those who have been with me from the very beginning: I can’t thank you enough. To those who are now just joining me: welcome and thank you for giving me a chance.

  About the Author

Jessica Berg, a child of the Dakotas and the prairie, grew up amongst hard-working men and women and learned at an early age to “put some effort into it.” Following that wise adage, she has put effort into teaching high school English for over a decade, being a mother to four children (she finds herself surprised at this number too), basking in the love of her husband of more than fifteen years, and losing herself in the imaginary worlds she creates.
