“Even if it means everything is over?”
“Even if it means everything’s over,” she insisted, nodding.
“I don’t get it, Rebecca. You know you shouldn’t do this. No good is going to come from it. I’m a cop myself. I know. You’re never going to be able to come back from this. You’ll lose everything. What are you going to do after this?”
“I can rebuild.”
“It’s not worth it.”
“The peace is worth it.”
“The peace is worth it?” he muttered. Faruq gave a steely expression of resignation. Fine. He sighed and ran a hand over his head.
“You’d think I was stressing you out.”
“You are,” he admitted.
“Oh well,” she sighed. “Would you see if one of the officers could take me home? I don’t think I could do a cab looking like this.”
“I can.”
“You don’t have to.”
“No, I want to. C’mon.” They turned around and began toward Faruq’s cruiser.
Rebecca had lost a lot today. Hell, after this whole trip, everything was going to be gone. But as she thought about her past, she realized there were things she never had anyway. She never had peace of mind, never could trust, never could love.
So, yes, she had lost a lot, but she had regained her sense of self-worth. And maybe she would lose her job, too, but at least she no longer felt compelled to drown her sorrows in alcohol.
A dark victory this was, but a victory, nonetheless.
About the Author
Harper Shaw is an emerging author of thrillers living in central Florida. Her hobbies include watching crime thrillers on TV. She watched Gone Girl and was hooked on writing thrillers except work and family always got in the way. Then she realized that if she spent an hour writing after dinner every night she'd have a book in no time.
Nowadays she waits until her family goes to sleep to begin to write her psychological thrillers with twisty endings. She doesn't let her kids read what she writes so as not to scar them for life.
