“Come on, Dad, I’m not a kid.” He held out his hand. “If you have some change for the vending machine, I’ll make myself scarce.”
Gabe fished in his pocket and dumped a wad of change into Dakota’s hand. “Go for it.”
“Thanks, Dad.” Dakota dived for the door, his stomach rumbling loudly. “Told you I was hungry,” he yelled from the hall.
Kayla laughed, her gaze following Dakota. “He’s a good kid.”
“He was right, you know.”
“About what?” When her eyes met his, her chin dipped and a blush blossomed in her cheeks as she fiddled with the hem of her shirt.
“There’s gonna be some kissing or something going on in here.” He reached out and tipped her chin up. “Starting about now.” Bending forward, he brushed his lips across hers.
Her good hand rested on his chest and then pushed away. “Are you sure this is what you want? You didn’t seem so sure the other night.”
“I was as soon as I left you.”
“How do I know you won’t leave again?”
He smiled. “Because I can’t.”
Kayla’s brows furrowed. “Why not?”
“I’ve fallen in love with a beautiful redhead.”
“So soon?” Her brows lifted into her tumbled curls. “I didn’t think you believed in true love.”
“It only took the right woman to prove me wrong.”
Her lips parted on a quickly indrawn breath. “How am I supposed to be serious when you say such nice things to me?”
“I’m serious enough for the both of us.” He pulled her into his arms. “Let me prove it to you.” Gabe claimed her mouth, pressing her body against his, the rise of his erection nudging her tummy. When he lifted his head, her eyes were glazed.
“I think it will take a lot more than that to prove it to me.” Kayla curled her fingers around the back of his neck and brought his mouth back to hers.
“Baby, time is on our side,” he whispered. “We have the rest of our lives.”
