Cry For Help Page 28

by Wendy Dranfield

Does she even want to work here? And with Douglas? She realizes that now she’s got Owen back and can begin the process of overturning her manslaughter conviction, she wants nothing more than to get her old job back. She deserves it after everything she’s been through. And she’d be working for a woman this time. Carmen might be intimidating, but she’s worked for the FBI. Madison could learn a lot from her and maybe even eventually become a federal agent herself. She thinks of her father, who worked for the bureau in Alaska. Perhaps he could help her if she can track him down after all these years.

“I’m available.” She blurts it out, instantly reddening. “I mean, when you eventually advertise the detective role, I’d like to apply. You won’t know this, Carmen, but I used to work here before.”

Carmen nods, her face not giving anything away. “Yes, I know. Chief Sullivan has told me about you.”

Madison’s heart is beating out of her chest. “I’d love to come back. To prove myself.”

Carmen almost smiles. Almost. “Things are a little uncertain at the moment, Ms. Harper. But why don’t you and I talk again in the near future? I’m sure there are issues we need to resolve about how your case was handled.”

Madison nods and Carmen finally smiles at her. She holds out her hand. “It was nice to meet you.”

Madison takes it, hoping the woman can’t feel that she’s trembling.

She turns to the door, where Nate is staring at his phone with a serious expression. Has Father Connor got in touch? A feeling of dread washes over her. He’ll never be free of that man until they have their long-overdue showdown. She can help Nate with that. He’s done so much for her, and now that she’s found her son, they can focus on finding the priest. It’s the only way he’s ever going to get over what happened to him and his fiancée.

He pockets his phone and tries to give her a reassuring smile. She looks at Owen, who is grinning at her, and she can’t help feeling how lucky she is to have him back.

She walks toward them and puts her arm around Owen. “Come on, you two,” she says. “Let’s go home.”

Totally gripped by this rollercoaster of a crime thriller and dying to know what’s next for Madison?

  Detective Madison Harper Book 1

  Get it here!

You thought your little girl was safe at summer camp. You were wrong…

She drags her eyes open, realizing she’s starting to fade. Did she imagine the voices, or were they real? She tries calling out—“Daddy?”—using all her remaining strength. But she’s too late and her little voice just isn’t loud enough…

When Detective Madison Harper arrives at a remote summer camp in Shadow Falls, northern California, her heart breaks for Jenny, the sweet little girl last seen splashing in the lake with her friends before she vanished. Peering into the silent cabins filled with rows of neatly made beds, Madison knows this idyllic place is hiding a terrible secret.

The girl’s parents are distraught, and the local police have no leads—they desperately need Madison’s help. She’ll do whatever it takes to crack this case, because it’s the only way back to the son she lost to the care system years ago when she was framed for a crime she didn’t commit.

But with the camp staff keeping tight-lipped and her new partner on the edge of a breakdown, Madison can’t find any truth to her instinct that there is more to Jenny’s perfect parents than meets the eye. Until she discovers a disturbing family portrait Jenny drew at the local library. Was this angelic girl more troubled than anybody knew? Was she in danger from those she trusted most?

One thing is certain, if Madison doesn't find the answers soon, the lives of more innocent children will be at risk…

An absolutely unputdownable crime thriller that will keep you up all night! Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Robert Dugoni and Melinda Leigh.
