They kissed. Sharon pulled his mouth tight to her own. Her zeal at this covert ménage à trois flushed her cheekbones. She peeked at me with brazen lust.

  My heart pumped hard all the way to the bottom of my stomach. I searched the room for an escape and spied Garboski, stuttering out a conversation with his unanticipated date.

  The big guy moved toward the porch at Natsuko’s urging. A sea breeze ruffled her hair as she crossed the threshold. Garboski nearly took out the door jamb watching it glide across her perfect skin. His big feet snagged the umbrellas. He fumbled to pick them up. Natsuko laid her hand between his shoulder blades to tame his humiliation. They scooted into the porch, chittering over the small disaster. I observed them against the backdrop of lawn grass made more verdant by the dipping sun.

  A gentle wind once again floated Natsuko’s hair up from her shoulders. She’d told me “Natsuko” meant “Summer” and that Keziah had helped her choose her stripper name as a reminder of a better life to come.

  Winter in Okinawa had its chilling and indecisive moments. But Natsuko standing beside my love-starved friend sent a warm and buoyant message.
