  Epilogue

  BERLIN, GERMANY

Elizabeth Park picked her way around the café patrons, smiling apologies as she bumped against shopping bags on her way to the counter. She ordered a hot lemon and ginger drink, something new she had discovered during her week in Germany. Bess carried her drink to a small table in the window, settled into her seat, and then scrolled through the news events that seemed to be dominating the start of the new year. The news from Scandinavia seemed to focus on the weather, how few firework accidents there had been this New Year’s Eve compared to the last, and the latest scandal in the royal family. Bess turned her phone upside down, hiding the screen, no more or less interested in royal scandals than she was the previous day, or the day before that.

She looked up as a tall man with dark hair entered the café. She caught her breath as she realised he looked familiar, only to remember he had been in the café three times during the six days she had been there. Always at the same time, as if he was meeting someone. Someone who never showed.

  How familiar, she thought.

Bess looked away as the man tried to catch her eye. Perhaps he had made the same observations about her. She almost laughed at the thought, conjuring all kinds of ideas about topics of conversation, wondering if she would ever do small talk, without first checking the exits, or scanning the customers for potential threats.

  Which reminds me.

Bess sipped her drink, smarting at the bitter lemon taste, enjoying the ginger kick, as she looked around the café. There were a few regulars, and the young couple kissing at the table by the entrance also looked familiar. But otherwise, according to the various labels she attached to people when doing her risk assessments, the people in the café were genuine patrons.

Apart from the man with the glossy magazine. The one in the baseball cap.

Bess focused on him for a moment, curious that the peak of his cap was angled just right in the glare of the overhead lights, to throw his face into shadow. His clothes were suitably plain, but smart, maybe even expensive. A closer look at his jacket cuffs revealed white shirt sleeves, strong hands, and fingers, holding the magazine, and tapping the cover – his right hand, with one finger tapping the picture of a car on the cover. Bess hid her smile behind her glass as she focused on the magazine – a speciality magazine, German, but with the unmistakeable topic of classic cars.

  “Excuse me?”

Bess looked up, corralling the smile on her lips as the dark-haired café patron she had seen earlier asked if he could join her.

“I’m waiting for someone,” she said.

“You’ve been waiting many times,” the man said. “Perhaps he’s not coming?”

“I don’t know,” Bess said, with another glance at the man in the baseball cap. “I think I’ll wait just a little longer.”

  About the Author

Christoffer Petersen is the author’s pen name. He lives in Denmark. Chris started writing stories about Greenland while teaching in Qaanaaq, the largest village in the very north of Greenland – the population peaked at 600 during the two years he lived there. Chris spent a total of seven years in Greenland, teaching in remote communities and at the Police Academy in the capital of Nuuk.

Chris continues to be inspired by the vast icy wilderness of the Arctic and his books have a common setting in the region, with a Scandinavian influence. He has also watched enough Bourne movies to no longer be surprised by the plot, but not enough to get bored.
