“Mate? Where are you?” he calls out.
“I’m out here,” I reply. I love our enclosed porch off the back of the house and since it’s my favorite spot, Maverick has added material objects to make it more relaxing and inviting. Of course, right now, as huge as I am, nothing is really comfortable for too long. He smiles as he joins me on the swing, pulling me into his arms and kissing me. “I think that’s how we got to this point,” I tease, rubbing my hand over my protruding belly.
“Most assuredly,” he agrees, his hand joining mine. “So, what has you out here, love?”
“The three of them were inside chanting and I felt like I was getting in the way,” I admit.
Just then the door flies open and Leigh joins us, muttering, “Those three are ridiculous! Do you know that now they are chanting about me?”
“What the hell are they up to?” Maverick asks, wide-eyed.
“Me finding a mate! I’m flipping twenty years old, what do I need a mate for anyway? I’m perfectly content with me, myself and I. I’m the perfect company for myself, and I know how to lower the toilet seat! Those three need to be gagged.” Her huffing and puffing is hysterical. If she only knew how precious a mate is to our kind, she might be willing to change her tune. One day, she’ll see. It’s going to take a special male to deal with her. She’s a bit of a diva and has an independent streak a mile long.
I start giggling because she sounds so disgusted right now. “Ah, but you’re going to want a mate at some point, Leigh.”
“She’s too young,” Maverick argues. I roll my eyes because seriously? Now he’s acting like a big brother. Next, he’ll be marking around her to warn others away!
“She’s not too young,” Esmerelda interjects, walking out onto the porch. “And we need to make sure that the right one finds her when it’s time.”
“Seriously? Can we not have a conversation alone anymore?” Maverick mutters in my ear.
“You invited them to live here,” I remind him, whispering back in his ear before I nip the lobe. I feel his body shiver and grin.
“Not her,” he replies, pointing in Esmerelda’s direction. “Yet, here she is more often than not. Why can’t she bother Paxton and his mate?”
“I think we need to build a guest quarters. I’m not looking forward to this one's arrival,” he states, caressing where his baby resides. “We’ll never be able to hold or parent him or her with them always under foot.”
“I think you should,” Esmerelda responds. “Ask Paxton who he used. My quarters there are divine and then, I can split my time between the two households.”
“Um… fuck,” Maverick swipes his hand through his hair. “Me and my big fat mouth.”
“I find that I like that mouth of yours, mate.”
“Ew, that’s disgusting. Do not put that image in my head, sister dearest,” Leigh spits out.
“You’ll think differently someday, little one,” Esmerelda soothes. “We’re making sure of it so don’t worry.”
“I need my own place, can you make that happen, Maverick?” Leigh whines.
“Yeah, little sister. I’ll make that happen.” Leigh squeals in delight, then rushes over sitting on his lap. As she peppers his face with kisses, Maverick’s face lights up and he laughs.
Yeah, family has awakened so many emotions for my man. I can see the tension he used to carry around his eyes is no longer present.
Maverick
I always believed I was meant to be alone in this world. Finding my mate, my parents and discovering I had a sister has been the best things to ever happen in my life. I was apprehensive at first about having Rowina and Kash living under the same roof as I do, but the bond we’ve formed, the talks we’ve had, have altered my life in so many positive ways.
I can’t help but look forward to what the future holds for us all. Leigh has started training to join the Rogue Enforcers’ ranks. Colton is ecstatic to have her join us. What humans would perceive as a man’s world, is what we like to say is a universal world. All shifters are welcome. As long as they are loyal, law abiding… our laws; not that of humans, and work every day to improve our kind, they are welcomed with opened arms.
We strive every day to be better than we were the day before. This is a value I will ensure my children work hard to achieve on a daily basis. A father, I still can’t believe it. Connelly is going to be the best of mothers to our child and future children, I just hope I can make them all proud of the man I am.
As those thoughts enter my head, three alerts sound off at the same time. “Never a dull moment when you’re an enforcer.” Paxton, Leigh and I head into my office to return Colton’s call.
