“Okay, Sam,” Natalie said. “I trust you.”
It wasn’t exactly a lie that I had just told my girlfriend. Of course, it also wasn’t exactly the truth, but since it was partially true, I figured that for now, it would just have to be close enough to a real answer.
The whole truth of the matter wasn’t just that I didn’t want to take the time to explain our plans to Isaac-- or risk someone overhearing that I was about to leave the girls unprotected. The reality was that I wasn’t sure if Isaac was a vampire or not, and if he was, I wanted him to think that I was just going along with his plan. Because if he planned to fight me or try to take the girls from me, I wanted to catch him completely by surprise.

“I guess we better go rejoin the others,” I said. “They’ll send in a search party in a minute.”

“Miss us?” I asked as we walked quietly up behind them.
Catherine and Erika both immediately reached for their guns, but they immediately relaxed when they saw it was me. Poor Lily got so scared that she just shot up from a bent-over position so fast that she had to grip a wine rack so she wouldn’t fall over.
“Holy mother of god!” Lily swore. “You could fuckin’ kill somebody if you sneak up on them like that!”
“I think that’s probably the point,” I laughed. “I’m a vamp, remember? We’re supposed to be stealthy and shit.”
“We could’ve shot you, you know.” Catherine folded her arms over her chest. “I’m just saying.”
“But you didn’t,” I said, “so I’m pretty sure that means that someone has been paying attention to Nat’s lessons on gun safety.”
“Ugh, whatever,” the auburn-haired girl said. “Never point your gun at something unless you know what the fuck it is and are prepared to shoot it. It’s not like rocket science.”
“You’d be surprised,” Natalie chuckled. “Do you know how many people my dad knew who accidentally shot their own feet or somebody else’s ears or filled somebody with buckshot, just because they didn’t follow the basic rules?”
“Well, either way, thanks for not trying to shoot me,” I told the girls.
“You’re very welcome,” Catherine said with a grand gesture. “Did you two catch up on your, uh…”
“Beauty sleep?” Erika suggested, but her cheeks turned red even though she had clearly meant it as a joke.
“But I thought we were pretty quiet!” Natalie said.
“Uh, yeah, if you call a bunch of rhythmic thumping up against the door quiet,” Lily said with a smirk. “It’s okay, you don’t have to be embarrassed. You gotta do what you gotta do, right?”
“More like you gotta do who you gotta do,” Catherine said.

“Nah, it’s alright,” Lily said. “It definitely didn’t sound like you two were, ah, uncomfortable at all.”

It would look like some construction was underway in the garage itself, so on the small chance that someone drove past the garage at all, they probably wouldn’t be tempted to go past the cones.

The
re was always some kind of goddamn construction around here, so no one would be surprised to find orange cones at the entrance of a parking garage. It also meant that it shouldn’t take me very long to find barrels that I could use, too. Besides, before I knew without a doubt whether or not Isaac was a vampire, I had to treat him like Nat’s family, and for me, that meant treating him like my own family.
