Miracle on Shifter Street Page 9

by Braylon Black

I really didn’t. The rest of the world was just like Vale Valley, only not as beautiful, magical, special, or friendly. Don’t get me wrong, it was fine, but… it just felt a little bit colder, a little bit rougher around the edges. It wasn’t for me.

Fortunately, Logan had packed up all of his stuff and moved permanently to Vale Valley last winter, and he absolutely loved it here. Julio had also moved in after a while. Now with the triplets, our house was bursting at the seams, but instead of moving to a bigger house Logan promised he’d build on an addition once the snow melted. I was grateful for that, because I wanted to live here in this house, my grandma’s house… forever.

“Here, let me take Brennan,” Logan said, offering his free arm. “I’ll heat up the bottles to feed them if you want to start unpacking.”

I transferred the little one over and Logan took the two babies into the kitchen.

I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out my rabbit’s foot. I held it tight in my palm and savored its magic as I gazed down at little Robbie snoozing peacefully under the Christmas tree. I couldn’t tell you much about his personality, because so far all the little guy ever did was eat and sleep. My precious little angel. How considerate of him to take it so easy on us, when the other two were so difficult.

I strolled into the bedroom, took off my coat and tossed it on the bed. I realized I should put my rabbit’s foot back in its designated spot. There had been several times over the past year when I thought I’d lost it, so when I didn’t have it on me, I’d started leaving it in the same spot for safekeeping: my grandmother’s old jewelry box.

I lifted the lid and gasped, startled to find that there was already a rabbit’s foot inside.

I picked it up and looked at it. Right, this was the fake one.

  Wasn’t it?

Then I held up the real one in my other hand. I glanced them back and forth. Back and forth.

  Uh oh.

They felt the same. They looked the same. That subtle ‘magical’ feeling seemed to emanate from both of them equally. Or maybe… maybe there was no magical feeling at all.

I had no idea which was supposed to be the real one.

“Well, isn’t this awkward,” I said out loud.

Was it possible I’d accidentally taken the wrong one with me for the entire weeklong trip? Nothing bad had happened to us, other than a few minor incidents. So it must’ve been the real one.

  Or maybe…

“Babe?” Logan called out from the doorway. “Want me to make you a sandwich? I’m starving.”

I quickly shoved both rabbit’s feet into the jewelry box and slammed the lid shut before spinning around to face him. “Um, sure! Yes please, darling!”

He gave me a funny look. “Everything okay?”

“Yes,” I smiled innocently. “Everything’s great.”

“Okay…” he said uncertainly before turning and leaving the room.

I huffed out a breath and stared in consternation at the jewelry box.

I had two options. I could wrack my brain over this and worry myself to death about it. Or… I could just forget about it and move on.

After lingering for a few more minutes, I finally came to a conclusion.

  It didn’t matter.

“Maybe I make my own luck,” I whispered to myself with a smile as I joined my family in the kitchen.
