While I would find it funny, I’m not sure my family or Damien’s would. I figure we should wait until the girls are at least ten before we start doing anything crime-scene themed.
“Gotcha!” I hear Katie cry, and there’s whine-screams before she appears, a toddler under each arm. “I found the miscreants.”
“Auntie Katie,” Erin pleads, breaking out the puppy-dog eyes.
Katie whistles as she gets a good view of the ketchup-filled living room. “Did someone die in here?”
“Not yet,” I mutter under my breath. Emma reaches out and puts her hand on my mouth.
“Die?” Emma says in her toddler voice. “Die?”
“No.” Sometimes I worry about the vocabulary they’re developing. “No death.”
Emma gives me her skeptical look. With a sigh, I move over to the couch and sink down on it. Katie puts the other two on top of me, so I have three toddler bodies wriggling all over me as they fight over who gets to be where.
I can’t fit my arms around all of them, but I love them more than I ever thought was possible. Don’t get me wrong, my life is insane sometimes. I’m still a homicide detective full-time. Damien’s still with the FBI. But coming home to the girls at the end of a long shift is worth the world.
“Who cut who?” Damien asks as he walks through the front door, which is still open from Katie leaving it open.
I sigh. Erin and Emily almost fall off the couch in their eagerness to get to him, Emma launching herself off like a rocket as they all tackle him at once.
“DADDY!” The word echoes, and I try and look exasperated but I can’t. Not when my heart is so full.
Even if my living room looks like a crime scene.
“How are my girls?” Damien asks, giving a kiss to each of them. Then he comes over to me, still with an army of toddlers clinging to him, and he leans down and kisses me. “Did you have a good day?”
“It’s ketchup,” I say, fighting a grin.
“Better than a murder,” he says thoughtfully. He leans down and kisses me longer, deeper. It’s the type of kiss that makes my body ache, that holds so many promises.
“Katie’s volunteered to take the kids for the night,” Damien says.
“I did?” Katie looks surprised, but then she grins. “I did,” she agrees.
My eyes flicker from her to him, and when his eyes glint, my stomach flips. “Good,” I say, my eyes on him now, heat building up inside me. “Because you know I hate to share.” I lean over to grab Emma who is now kicking Erin while Emily laughs, but end up pulled onto the floor, Damien landing on his ass next to me.
He’s laughing, smiling, the warmth in his face the best thing I’ve ever seen.
And it’s about to get better, because there’s a positive pregnancy test wrapped in a box waiting on the bed. He’ll go crazy, and in the best way.
We end up in a family group hug, and my heart hurts with how much I love my family. How much I would do for them.
How did I get this lucky?
