  Draconians: A fierce, reptilian race.

  Dûrndûran: A Gordian word meaning both "hello" and "go have sex with yourself."

  Embassy Row: Area of the West End where foreign consulates are located.

  Emissary Hotel: Exclusive hotel located near the Embassy Row area of Regalis. Home of the Grove restaurant.

  Eudora Prime: A planet on the border of the Imperium where the Kamal Maut can be found.

  Fat Cat Casino: A large gambling house on Regalis run by Big G.

  Five Families: The most powerful houses of the Imperial nobility. Direct descendants of the captains from the surviving sleeper ships.

  Fogmore Gardens: Cemetery where the Imperial family is buried. Located adjacent to the Palace grounds.

  Galanis: A planet largely owned and controlled by the Groen family.

  Gordian: A race of stubborn, boar-like humanoids with pig noses and tusks. Physically stocky, but shorter than the average human.

  Grarfell (“Gray Old Man”): Home world of the Gordian race.

  Greenwood Country Club: Exclusive golfing club for the rich and famous located in the West End of Regalis.

  Griefers: An Ashetown street gang led by Kid Vicious.

  Groen: One of the Five Families, represented by a botonée cross.

  Grove, The: Restaurant located inside the Emissary Hotel. Famous for its brunch.

  Hypersled: A type of rocket-powered snow sled used for racing.

  Imperium: An empire largely controlled by humans. Founded 700 years ago, after humans arrived in sleeper ships from Earth after an 800-year journey.

  Kamal Maut (“Death Lotus”): A terrifying creature evolved from fungi that can exhale a cloud of poisonous spores.

  Kurkslag: A Gordian city-state located beneath the surface of Grarfell.

  Lotus: A new chem that users ingest by letting a petal-like tab dissolve on their tongue. Causes users to fall into a deep sleep and have vivid dreams. Highly addictive.

  Lotus Eaters: Name for those who use Lotus.

  Lokeren: A water planet featuring tropical archipelagos and the home of the Veber family estate.

  LSV: Name for a commonly used chem.

  Mad Hatter: Name for a commonly used chem.

  Max Jō: A brand of extreme coffee.

  Maxwell: Detective Martel’s handgun, a brushed chrome-plated, .44 Magnum with a thick, heavy barrel.

  Maycare Institute of Xeno Studies: An organization founded by Lord Devlin Maycare and run by Professor Jessica Doric. The purpose of the institute is to find and take possession of xeno technology before it falls into the hands of disreputable parties such as Warlock Industries.

  Middleton: A district of Regalis inhabited by large businesses and, in general, middle-class neighborhoods.

  Montros: One of the Five Families, represented by a rose.

  Mudderfield Downs: Name of a horse track in the city of Regalis.

  Nobles (“Aristocracy”): Families of the Imperium who are directly descended from the crews of the sleeper ships. The most powerful of these are called the Five Families.

  Nodesphere: A vast network of computers (i.e., an internet).

  Polar Run: Name of a hypersled track located at the south pole of the planet Aldorus.

  Psi Lords: A secretive data cartel that uses dark psi and espionage to gather and sell information to the highest bidder.

  Psionics: Special mental abilities common among Dahl and related sub-species.

  Regalis: Capital city and seat of government of the Imperium, located on the planet Aldorus.

  Regalis Police Department (“Regalis PD”): The collection of precincts that make up the Regalis police.

  Regency Heights Sanatorium: A mental health facility consisting of over thirty acres of wooded, gently sloping land outside of Regalis.

  Rey Sol (“Sun King”): Name of Devlin Maycare’s maritime yacht.

  Saint Eligius Royal Hospital: A hospital catering exclusively to the rich and powerful of Imperial society, including the Emperor's own family.

  Si-Sawat: A crime syndicate made up of Tikarin and led by Big G.

  Sous-Sol, Le (“The Basement”): A bar owned by Louis Rion, located in Ashetown at the corner of Marlowe and Vine.

  Starling: Starship owned by Magnus Black.

  Tagus: One of the Five Families, represented by a lion.

  Technas Delphi: Ta Demona’s home world, run by a female-centered theocracy called the Augmentors.

  TeeHee Tea: A popular brand of tea, believed to contain mood-altering ingredients.

  Tikarin: A feline race slightly smaller than an average human.

  Transmat: A transportation device that dematerializes travelers in one location and then beams them to a new location where they are rematerialized.

  Tubby Wubby: Genetically engineered teddy bear “toys” that became psychotic once they were sold to the public.

  Veber: One of the Five Families, represented by a scallop shell.

  VOX News: A news organization with a near-monopoly share of the broadcast market throughout the Imperium.

  Warlock Industries: A mega-corporation operating throughout the Imperium, specializing in military hardware, advanced technology, and genetic experimentation.

  West End: The richest district of Regalis. Also, the location of most Imperial government buildings.

  Xeno: A non-human.

  Zahmetli Hamami: A Turkish bath visited by Lord Devlin Maycare and Lord Eugene “Ducky” Davenport.
