I stand and watch them go, a smile on my lips.
Married to a sheriff’s deputy, pregnant, with a little stepdaughter that I completely adore. I never, ever thought this would be my life, not when I lived in the commune, not when I ran, and not even when I first met Erik.
Now though, it’s perfect. I’m smiling every day. My life is still and happy and glad. We have friends at the station, we have friends at the diner, and the whole town is like one big family to us.
Not to mention, my tormentor, my kidnapper, is rotting in jail where he belongs.
I don’t talk to my mother. It’s hard, but it’s for the best. She’s still full into Balancogen. They’re trying to grow their little group now that Mark’s gone and I think it’s going well for them. I hate it, but I can’t do anything to stop it.
That’s not my problem anyway. I have enough to worry about.
I head back to the car. I’m off from work at the diner today, so I figure I’ll do some work at the house before stopping back at the station in a few hours. I still think of the house as Erik’s place, but it’s both of ours now. I’ve helped with a lot of the projects in the last couple of years, and the house is finally looking like it’s a finished product instead of a work in progress.
Really, it’s heaven. I smile every day when I wake up. My husband is gorgeous and devoted and an amazing father. My stepdaughter is adorable and perfect. And soon, my baby is coming into this world.
It doesn’t get better than this.
I step into the car, kick snow off my boots, and drive back home.
