A Killer Duet Page 8

  “Case,” she whispered.

He prepared himself for the worst.

“That would make me the happiest woman alive. I thought you’d take your fame and move on or go back to something less in the spotlight. I knew better. I should have believed what my heart was telling me. I’ve just been hurt and had so many people try to use my fame for themselves. Whatever you want to do, as long as you’re with me, we’ll figure it out. On stage or off.” She stood on tiptoes and wrapped her arms around him and kissed him again.

This time he ended the kiss because they truly had to finish packing in order to checkout on time. And besides, once they arrived at her place in Tennessee, they’d have all the time in the world to kiss and make love. Maybe even make some songs together. After all, their first one had turned out to be a killer duet.

  Three months later…

Reaching across the table, Rain clasped Case’s hand as they finished signing contracts for new management. Scott had been arraigned and charged with several federal crimes. Dale had been given probation and had told her that it’d be best if he retired with his wife. Rain agreed. Looking at the man she loved, at their signatures on the contracts, the song that had been forming in her mind since the day they’d left Branson, finally came into being.

“So you really think we’re done with this False Music thing?” She asked when Case had finished scanning in the contracts to email back to their manager. “We’re talking about going back out on the road this fall.”

“For now. Certainly whatever Scott was doing has been taken care of. Johnny’s looking into some leads,” he said. “Why, are you still worried?”

Rain shook her head. “Not at all. Let’s go down to the studio. I got a new song that I think you’ll like.”

“It’s a date,” Case replied and the look in his eyes made her toes curl. She knew it’d be a while before they actually made it to the studio.

Hidden dangers out in the night

People too afraid of the spotlight

They called me false and they called me wrong

All because I give my heart with my song.

You came to me when I needed you most

Promised me safety and we could just coast

They didn’t tell me about the true threat

Just that I’d need to sing a killer duet

You’re my lover and my knight

You won’t stop until we’ve won the fight

You’ve got my body and now my heart

And now I hope you’re not just playing a part

You’re my lover and my knight

Let me love you all thought the night

Take my body. Take my heart.

Until forever, ‘til death do us part.
