  Corey gave a confused look. “You know what’s happening.”

  “You know what I mean,” Tyler said. Corey nodded and looked at the others.

  “Who are they?”

  Tyler stepped back and pointed. “This is Erika, and Nate.”

  They both stepped forward and extended a hand. After a few awkward seconds of greeting, Corey turned back to Tyler. “You know you can’t avoid him forever.”

  “I didn’t say I would. But maybe just for tonight.”

  Corey smiled and wrapped an arm around his neck. “It’s good to have you home, brother.”

  Behind them tongues of fire flickered up into the night sky as smoke drifted inland. As they walked back to the Jeep, Tyler began to share what was happening in the cities and towns further afield. He spoke of his harrowing moments, and the dangers that lurked in the darkness. All of it confirmed that the nation wasn’t coming back from this anytime soon. But it wasn’t what was occurring around the country that overshadowed Corey’s mind that night, or the words of the last man he killed, or even the knowledge that one of the inmates had escaped. Instead, it was the fear of reprisal — not only from inmates that had escaped but from all men like that — those who had nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

  Corey cast a glance over his shoulder at the men and women gathered. He’d felt the sense of unity and strength. He saw how the community could rally together. His father was wrong. If he’d learned anything in battle, it was this — staying alive wasn’t just about looking out for number one, it was in joining with others, standing shoulder to shoulder and if need be, fighting. And fight they would need to, in order to survive.

  For until the lights came back on, Whitefish was now at risk.
