Group Outing Page 6

by Katie May

“You’re good at this,” I muse as I race forward, Chase at my back. I glance over my shoulder to see him still at the ready.

He smiles boyishly at me behind his mask. “Marines. Eight years.”

  “Really? Where were you stationed?”

“Japan,” he answers easily as we move as one. Abruptly, he grabs my shoulder and shoves me to the side. I release a startled yelp as he fires his gun at three approaching figures.

Jerome, Kaleb, and Fernando all glare down at their paint-splattered shirts in dismay.

“Are you alright?” Chase rushes towards me and removes his face mask. This close, I’m struck once more by his almost ethereal beauty.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I assure him as he helps me to my feet, gently taking off my mask. He begins to wipe away dirt and debris, his hand lingering on my cheek a moment longer than necessary.

“Did anyone tell you that you look beautiful today?” he questions seriously, stroking my cheekbone with the rough pad of his thumb.

“I’m covered in a vest that makes me look three times my normal size, and I had a face mask on that probably made people think I was a serial killer,” I deadpan.

“See? Beautiful,” he assures me, that cheerful smile still firmly in place.

A pained groan comes from further down the alley, and the easy smile he wore diminishes. He places the safety helmet back on my head before pulling on his own.

“Stay behind me,” he warns as we move in tandem.

A large wagon rests before us with intricately designed wooden wheels. Grant lays on the ground in front of it, panting erratically. Red paint blooms on his chest, and at some point, he has disregarded the helmet.

“Looks like someone isn’t as badass as he would like me to believe,” I tease, and his pained eyes whip in my direction, widening almost imperceptibly. He opens his mouth, but only paint drizzles down his chin.

My unease skyrockets as I stare at my ex.

“Grant?” I question softly, lowering myself beside him. I tentatively touch the vest, and my hands come away sticky with paint.

  No, not paint.

  Blood.

“Grant!” My voice is a screech as I stare into his too pale face.

Because Grant wasn’t shot by a paintball gun. He was shot by a real gun.

“No!” Chase roars suddenly, and I turn just in time to see him throw himself in front of me. His body jerks as the bullet enters him, and I scream.

I hear footsteps pounding from all directions, my name being yelled, but all I can see is Chase’s wide eyes as he stares at the bullet wound in his chest. He collapses to the ground with an audible thump, eyes closing.

“Chase! Grant!” I volley my gaze between the angel and the reaper, but both men are unconscious.

Almost unbidden, my eyes flicker upwards to the figure retreating as the rest of my men converge.

All I can see is a familiar pig mask before he disappears around the corner.

The stress of the day finally catches up to me, and I feel my body tilting precariously to the side. I only have a second to hear someone’s desperate scream before unconsciousness mercifully consumes me.
