“Jayden came because he’s worried about his parents.” There were tears in those copper eyes as Arjun spoke. “According to Alpha Edrick, Saber and the others have found many who have been taken, but they are having trouble coming up with a plan to get the shifters back, because there are at least twenty campsites spread out.”
That didn’t surprise Baz. “They’re making it hard to free them without a major force coming in, which they would notice. We’d either need to send in small groups and coordinate our attacks, which would most likely still be noticed, or…”
Before he could say anything, the despair in Arjun’s eyes turned almost evil as he said, “We need a distraction.”
“Good thing our mate is the master of distraction,” Tevin said from the doorway. His own smile was wide with a twinkle of mischief in his eyes, making them dance with merriment.
Arjun snorted. “You aren’t half-bad yourself, mate.”
Baz wasn’t so sure he was okay with them being in danger. “It’s not safe,” he told them. “These humans will stop at nothing to capture or kill us.”
Arjun rolled his eyes and barked out a laugh. “Sweetheart, that’s what makes life fun.” Then he patted Jayden’s arm. “I promise. If we find your parents, I will do everything in my power to get them free.”
For the first time since he’d come outside to find Jayden on their porch, the young man smiled. “Really? You’d do that?”
“Those humans are going to find out what hell is really like when I’m through with them. Then they won’t dare come near a shifter again, for fear of what I’ll do to them,” Arjun told him as he stood up.
Baz wasn’t exactly sure what his mate planned, but from the stories he’d heard, he was fairly sure that if anyone could make the humans pay for their crimes, it was Arjun. Resigned to his mates being in danger and knowing as much as he wished it didn’t have to be that way, the fact was there was no such thing as being safe. Not in their world, anyway.
Probably not in any world. Life was a risk. It was just the way things were. But they couldn’t hide away or they would miss out on all it had to offer.
That would be worse in Baz’s mind. For if he hadn’t of taken the chance to lead the shifters from the human hunters, Baz wouldn’t have found his mates. That would have been a life not worth living.
“Let me make some calls while you two gather up whatever supplies you’re going to need,” he told his mates. Then he glanced over at Jayden. “I can’t make any promises about your parents, but I will do everything within my power to get them back.”
Profound relief filled those grey eyes. “Thank you,” Jayden said.
“Oh.” Arjun stopped Jayden as he was stepping down off the porch. “As for not feeling safe. There is an island you might want to consider. It’s run by friends of Miracle and it’s called Salvation. I’ll put in a call to Iniko in town and he’ll talk to you about it.”
That worry was back in Jayden’s gaze. “Would it be safe?”
Tevin nodded as he stepped up between Baz and Arjun. “Yosi Pendev owns it. He’s been in hiding for decades, and so far, no one who has tried has managed to breech the island to get to him. Trust us, it’s about the safest place on earth.”
Jayden nodded. “Thanks. I know I probably don’t deserve it, since I was the reason all this happened to begin with, but I’m grateful you’re willing to help me anyway.”
Before any of them could say a word, Jayden took off down the gravel driveway as if he couldn’t get out of there fast enough.
“Poor kid,” Arjun said as he leaned against Tevin. “He truly believes those humans never would have come after all the shifters if it hadn’t of been for him.”
“I know.” Baz stared after the kid even as he wrapped his arms around his mates for comfort. “I tried telling him it hadn’t just been his family that had shifted in front of humans recently. Unfortunately, he was the last one before they attacked.”

Copper eyes stared up at him filled with determination. No way was Baz going to disappoint his mate. “So long as you promise me you be as safe as possible while doing it, and that I can stand watch to protect you both.”
When Arjun and Tevin glanced at each other, clearly speaking without words, Baz feared he wasn’t about to like whatever they had planned.
It was Tevin who said, “I don’t think that’s going to be possible.” Before Baz could refute that, Tevin added. “If Jayden was right, there are too many sites for Arjun and me to stay together.”
Baz felt his heart drop.
“We’re going to have to split up,” Arjun confirmed the fear that had taken hold of Baz. “It’s the only way if we want to get it done quickly.”
“Then let it take longer,” Baz bit out, refusing to think that he would have to choose which mate to protect.
But both his mates were shaking their heads.
“We can’t.” Arjun insisted. “It would mean risking being discovered. The sooner we set up our devices, the sooner we can strike their camps, which increases our chance of success.”
“He’s right.” Tevin reached up to cup Baz’s cheek. “If the humans discover our plan, we’ll all be in danger.”
“How am I supposed to protect you both if you’re in different places?” Baz blurted out in frustration. “How am I supposed to choose which one to follow?”
Tevin leaned up and kissed his lips gently. “You’ll follow Arjun.”
“Hey,” Arjun started to argue, but Tevin then kissed him to stop whatever objection Arhejun had.
