The Life Page 28

by Paul Kite

A sudden decision came to me quickly and unexpectedly. I possessed the totem Black Wolf Zurval un Ra. Of course, the gods Vegor and Onarkis, the patrons of dark and light elves, strongly advised me not to do that. I didn’t care!

I tried to materialize a wolf in this world mentally, as I did with daggers, imagining what it looked like. It didn’t work! But there was a rather interesting system message.

  Attention!

You are going to summon the totem Black Wolf Zurval un Ra into this world. The mad half-god, once it’s freed, is capable of anything. The gods avoid contact with such an ancient creature.

The auras of evil, fear and cruelty, eternally ingrained into the essence of the immortal black wolf, can drive you crazy and plunge almost any living creature into madness. If you decide to invoke Zurval un Ra, your reputation with all the known races that inhabit the kingdoms of Nazhar and Havrtol, the Dark and Light Forest, the Kingdom of Dwarfs, the Wastelands of the Orcs and the Free Lands will change to Hate.

Are you sure you want to embody the black wolf's totem?

  YesNo

“Yes, yes, yes!” I repeated persistently.

The additional possibility of the Daggers of Chaos to summon the totem Black Wolf Zurval un Ra has been activated.

The duration of the action is limited.

“Welcome to the Realm of Noria, Zurval un Ra!” I happily whispered with a maniacal smile.

Directly in front of me, a big wolf with black shiny fur began gradually appearing, like it was punching its way into this world! When it finally fully revealed itself, it emanated the strongest aura of horror ... by the way, it didn’t work on me at all. However, it worked perfectly on others.

Lsaeros’s angry cry came from behind me,

“You’re crazy Kraven! Get it out of here, I can’t work! It’s either going to huff its aura until my brains boil, or you set him on the monsters!” the wizard was nervous, I noted.

The black wolf, whose eyes seemed to be normal and clear, grinned predatorily and growled.

“Good little wolf!” I said gently, without risking getting closer to the dangerous beast, I didn’t know if it was capable of causing damage to its owner, “Calm down!” I tried to soothe the wolf, whose aura flashed with new force and the wizard groaned in protest behind my back.

Then another mob climbed onto the parapet and jumped on the black wolf's back.

The black wolf froze for a split second, and then jerked sharply, moving aside and throwing off his attacker. Instantly, Zurval un Ra jumped to the monster that had begun to get up, and hit it in the side with the paw, sending the small mob somewhere over the parapet of the tower platform.

“Kraven, hurry up!” Lsaeros shouted again, “If I interrupt the ritual, it will be a disaster!”

“Yeah, I’m trying to hurry up,” I said softly, so that the wizard wouldn’t hear me.

Throwing off another mob the same way, the wolf unexpectedly jumped towards me, raising its paw for a mortal strike. Squinting, I prepared to die...

Who are you? A quiet whisper rang in my head. Who am I? Why do I want to destroy you so much, but I can’t do it? Ar-rh-rh! Rage and anger are tearing me apart... I want to surrender to them completely... and to kill, to kill, to kill, aaaa...

“Zurval un Ra,” I answered hastily, realizing that death had bypassed me, but not for long, because the mobs really wanted to devour the wizard and me.

I know this name, the wolf said, shaking the head.

The wolf seemed to be reasonable. Maybe the legend was wrong? He didn’t look like a crazy psycho.

I had time to think before the other mob decided to attack the black wolf. Zurval un Ra instantly grabbed this monster with its fanged maw and literally ripped it in half, splashing blood on the platform.

“Ar-rr-rr!” glimpses of reason in the wolf’s eyes were replaced by a veil of madness. Its eyes filled with bottomless blackness.

“Ar-rr-rr!” snarling angrily, Zurval un Ra turned around and leaped over the parapet with a long jump.

Running up to the nearest loophole, I saw the black wolf sprinting headlong down the side of a mountain, leaping up and landing right in the mob crowd, not far from the suspiciously silent ball-shaped monster. The wolf immediately entered the fight with claws and teeth, turning into a killing machine!

“Will you be long?” I asked the wizard loudly, without turning around.

The monsters seemed distracted, so I could breathe for now.

“No, It’ll be over soon,” Lsaeros replied. “Don’t wonder off!”

“Well, I’m kind of not going anywhere,” I said with a nervous laugh.

  Chapter 40

The black wolf rushed among the enemies, managing not only to evade their strikes, but also to put them down one by one. This continued until it collided with the most gigantic monster. It clearly exceeded the size of my totem, but Zurval un Ra seemed not to care about its strength and other advantages in a heat of rage.

The two terrible creatures — the monster and the mad half-god half-beast — collided in a deadly battle.

When it finally seemed that Zurval un Ra was going to win and when it tore off the legs of the other creature that was now trying to crawl away, the black wolf suddenly began to vanish. Finally, before disappearing from this world, my totem started whining protractedly and sadly like a hurt puppy.

“Damn it,” I punched the wall, not understanding what was happening.

Did the gods intervene? Did they catch the wolf at the moment when it was fascinated by the fight, or did the call-out time end?

“What the heck?” I was angry, knowing well that if the wizard’s the ritual were to take five more minutes, the mobs would regroup and attack again.

For some reason the monsters were not in a hurry to attack. The wounded monster crawled back into the forest, and the strange, cat-like beasts, ran around the edge of the clearing, as if they felt something.

“Kraven!” Lsaeros distracted me from trying to see what exactly alerted the animals. “Everything is ready!”

I walked over to the wizard and he told me to hold out my hand.

  “Palm up,” he said.

But as soon as he touched the tip of the blade of my skin, I heard the sound of approaching steps behind me. Lsaeros froze, staring in surprise somewhere over my shoulder.

“Hello, Kraven,” the familiar Master Zorkhan’s voice rang out.

“Lsaeros,” another voice hissed ominously, and then I turned around.

Four drow were standing before us. Zorkhan, two masters of Shadows wearing masks, and a very old dark elf in a simple black robe.

“You’ve betrayed us, wizard Lsaeros,” Zorkhan grimaced. “Did you think that we would be so stupid not to protect this place? As soon as you appeared at the border of the forest, our signal amulets warned us…”

“The ritual hasn’t been completed yet,” the old drow interrupted the master of the shadows, pointing with a wrinkled hand to the runes inscribed by the magic barrier. “Make him finish the job.”

“Yes, Derolighler!” Zorkhan approached the wizard, ordering the elves to capture me.

It all happened so quickly that I didn’t even have time to react. I found myself standing with my hands twisted behind my back, so I couldn’t move at all.

“I think I need a drop of his blood,” the Master of Shadows nodded in my direction. “Let me finish the ritual for you,” Zorkhan snatched the dagger from Lsaeros’s palm and came up to me.

He pressed the blade to my cheek and made a deep cut, then the dark elf stood at the barrier of Ilian and drove the weapon into the magical veil with a sweeping stroke, held it down as if he was making a cut. The edges parted, and a gusty wind blew on us from that side, bringing in new smells and... ashes. Throwing the dagger aside, Zorkhan walked up to the head of the Shadow guild.

“We don’t need Kraven any more,” Derolighler said. “Send him to Ardhon-Farer,” he ordered the master of the Shadows, “the World of Spirits
will be happy about the new sacrifice.”

“Zuar vie mei krain. Sae gel dah yel garm. Zer gash ary mys…” Zorkhan began speaking what sounded like gibberish, raising and lowering his tone.

What the hell? What is the World of Spirits? What’s happening? Since when do nonmagical possess magic? I wanted to shout, but I couldn’t even speak, a drow was holding his hand over my mouth.

At the same time, a strange gloomy fog began forming Zorkhan’s hands, becoming thicker with each new sentence of his incomprehensible recitative. And when the long spell was over, he wrapped his hands around my head.

“Farewell, Kraven,” the Master of the Shadows chuckled. “Immortality will be your curse in that world.”

When he removed his hands, a short system message appeared before my eyes, this text was highlighted in bright red, warning me about danger.

  Attention!

You will be transferred to Ardhon-Farer in exactly one minute. Your character’s abilities are reduced by 99% to complete the transition to the World of Spirits and will stay that way for an hour after you are transferred to the other world.

Numbers appeared in the corner of my eye, and the countdown began.

I collapsed to the platform and saw how angry Derolighler grabbed Lsaeros by the throat and lifted him up in the air. The old drow’s nails turned into claws, and he stuck them into the wizard’s chest. Then he hit him again. Throwing away the mortally wounded Lsaeros, Derolighler stepped towards the passage in the barrier of Ilian.

“I’m leaving,” the head of the guild informed his people. “Zorkhan, call the rest of the fighters,” he ordered. “I appoint you the chief until my return.”

“Yes, Derolighler,” Zorkhan bowed his head submissively.

Thirty seconds passed. I couldn’t imagine what would happen next.

The wizard was lying on the platform, motionless, blood gushing from his chest, and I wanted only one thing — to kill at least one of these bastards. With tremendous effort, overcoming the weakness that overcame me after Zorkhan’s spell, I took out one of the strongest potions of complete recovery, crushed the phial with my teeth, and swallowed the life-saving liquid together with the fragments of glass. My bars of strength, endurance, and intellect began to recover slowly but stubbornly, struggling to overcome the debuffs.

The drow were standing apart, watching the paths to the mountainside. Zorkhan was absent, Derolighler was studying the runes by the gap of the magical veil. I materialized a weapon in my hands and stood up abruptly, activating a jerk. I plunged both daggers of Chaos into Derolighler’s back with all the rage that boiled inside me.

“No-o-o!” a cry rang out and, emerging from the air, Master Hontar lunged at me, and the two dark elves followed.

What’s he doing here? What a meeting!

“Bastard!” Hontar’s sword pierced my chest and I fell on Derolighler, who seemed to be still alive.

At this moment I noticed a bizarre flying reptile that landed on the platform, there was a dryad and... Dazrael!

I was also surprised to see Lsaeros standing behind Hontar, I thought he was dead. The wizard’s eyes were burning with red fire, and in his shaking hand he was squeezing the glass blade ritual dagger.

The wizard threw the blade as hard as he could and it hit me right in the heart. I took a step back, bump into Derolighler, and we both rolled over the edge of the platform, straight into the abyss.

At the same moment, the gap in the barrier of Ilian was closed, the countdown ticked through the final seconds, and the system informed me that I was killed for the second time in the game...
