“Your services?” Rodrick asked with a mocking tone. “What would Margaux want with a washed-up Blackatter that hides under the guise of a normal human life and lives in the countryside away from his own kind?”
I had a hard time believing what I just heard. No one spoke to my father that way. No one. He wasn’t afraid of my dad. Which only made me admire him more.
“I remain hidden because I know the consequences of giving in to the curse and allowing it to control my life.” My father was inches away from Rodrick. Rodrick didn’t back down. “And from what I’ve heard, those consequences are something you’re acutely familiar with, Mr. Blackbane.”
‘Blackbane? I thought his last name was Everleigh.’
My father scoffed and peered over to me then back at Rodrick. “No wonder. You’re here with my daughter because you don’t want history repeating itself.”
“Your daughter knows her own mind more than you give her credit for!” Rodrick hollered, clearly offended by my dad’s brazen accusation. “It was her who sought to break the curse. She approached me. It was her wish to continue her brother’s work and further investigate how to break it. That’s the reason we’re here.”
“And by coming you put her in danger.”
“Enough!” I fumed, letting my magic seep through my palms and placing it between the two of them before they came to throwing fists.
“Why are you here, dad? You’re particularly good at keeping secrets but its a little late to think you can get away with it now.”
My dad stiffened. He couldn’t keep whatever secrets he had anymore. Not if he genuinely wanted me to live. He took a hold of my arm and pulled it down, forcing my magic back into my skin with the power of his own. I grunted as it struck my flesh and retreated before I could focus hard enough to keep it out.
“I’m here to make a deal,” he said firmly. “One that was nearly fixed when Margaux vanished.”
“What sort of deal?” I asked.
“One to save your life.”
