  Preface

  Star Gazing

  Eva Kennedy

I look up at the stars that start to come out. I’ve graduated high school. It should be a big day, but all I can think about are the people who aren’t here to celebrate this with me. The sun shined all day, not a cloud in sight.

Yet, I feel them like weights in my heart. The gloominess is there even if no one can see it. I look around the backyard of the Lost Souls clubhouse and take in all the laughing and smiling faces. I see them, but I wonder if they see me. Really see me.

I’ve tried not to let anyone catch me moping, but this is a hard day for me. At one point, a slight wind kissed my cheek and I almost burst into tears. My gaze lands on him for the millionth time, the only reason I’ve had a real smile at all today.

He came to my graduation BBQ. He even brought me a gift.

Music fills the air nearby, grabbing my attention. I look to see my little sister, Sal, has brought out a small radio just for our little group around our small bonfire. In the background some rock music plays, but Sal turns on some R&B and I know she’s done it for me and my best friend, Misty.

Misty isn’t just my best friend, she’s the daughter of the Lost Souls’ VP, Mix. That’s a long story there, for another time.

“Ugh, I’m going to kill Colin one of these days,” Erica says as she comes over with four beers in hand.

“Oh please, you’ll be glued to his side in five minutes,” Misty teases. “You two can’t stay mad at each other for longer than two seconds. It’s only the fact that you’re both stubborn as fuck that you’ll take a whole five minutes.”

I laugh at Reap’s pretty pouts. Erica or Reap as we all call her is gorgeous. It’s hard not to notice even through her rough biker exterior.

Which is what draws your attention to the gorgeous best friends. Their friendship is almost as stunning as the sight of the two of them together. The pair are indeed inseparable.

“She’s right, you know. He’s going to say something he thinks is funny and he’ll come looking for you to tell you about it and the next thing you know, you both are going to take off laughing,” I say.

“Y’all don’t know what you’re talking about,” Reap mumbles, handing over the beers.

Sal looks around before she takes one. No doubt looking for our big brother. I know exactly where King is. He’s with him.

I steal another peek in their direction. How does a man his size make jeans and a cut look so good? His thighs are a thing to marvel at as are his arms. The rips in the jeans only make him look that much more sexy.

The white T-shirt beneath his cut stretches across his chest, showing off all his muscles as it molds to his abs. I bite my lip and sigh. If only I were older and had a little more confidence.

I push up my glasses and turn away. Taking a sip of my beer, I tune back into the conversation. A frown comes to my lips as the bitter taste registers on my tongue.

  This stuff is gross.

“What are you talking about?” Sal laughs.

“Right,” Misty exclaims. “You two are saying the exact same thing. Why are you so mad at him?”

“Never mind. You guys don’t understand,” Reap huffs.

“I think I do,” Misty says.

I tilt my head at the way Misty says that. I know my best friend. She’s hinting at something. Before I can lock in on what, Sal gets my attention.

“Hey, so you guys are going to school in Georgia. Are you ready for that?”

I think on the question for a bit. Sal has gone away to school for longer than I can remember. Me, I don’t know how I feel.

I know King wants me and Misty to go to Georgia. I’ve been accepted into a great program. I’ve never really fit in around here, so…

“Yeah, I’m excited, I think. Something new. Maybe I can reinvent myself,” I say and laugh.

“I don’t think you need to change anything about you. I love that you love books and you’re in your own world most of the time. Just because we’ve grown up around bikers doesn’t mean we have to be just like them. I think Mom and Dad would be really proud of you.”

I take in a sharp breath. I don’t think Sal even knows how much I needed those words. I wrap an arm around her shoulders and tug her close.

“They’d be proud of you too. King and I both are.” I kiss her forehead and give her a squeeze. “We just have to keep pushing. We’ll make them proud.”

  Owen Mason aka Brick

  I glance across the
yard and catch her sitting with her friends and sister. I have to take a pull from my beer and shake my head clear. Where’s the girl with pigtails and that chubby-faced smile?

  Fuck.

I wasn’t expecting any of this when I arrived. It’s the dress. She’s not in her baggy jeans and T-shirt. Damn. Eva is a grown woman now.

Not grown enough, asshole. She’s eighteen, you’re twenty-seven. King would kill your ass.

I swallow and turn away. My thoughts are so confusing. My gaze has landed on her so many times today. Something is off. She doesn’t look as happy as she should.

I muse on that. Cage and Rose aren’t here for this. King has thrown a hell of a BBQ, but their absence has to have a weight to it.

“What’s the deal with your cousin and that chick she’s been bringing around? You haven’t mentioned that shit since you’ve been here,” King says, drawing my attention.

I frown as I think of Jemma and Mags. I don’t know what to think of the situation. Honestly, from the moment Eva walked out of the clubhouse when I arrived, I haven’t thought about either of them.

I shrug. “I’m not sure. It’s been fun,” I reply.

King narrows his eyes at me. “Listen, be careful with that shit. Something ain’t right about them two. I know she’s your cousin. I get your history. You know I understand you, brother. Just a word of caution,” he warns.

I nod and take a sip of my beer. A peal of laughter followed by a round of curses makes me turn to look in Eva’s direction. Grim and Reap are roughhousing and cursing each other out.

I smile. I’ve never seen closer friends. I know for a fact the two would die for each other. You don’t see one without the other for long.

“Those two are nuts,” King says, jutting his chin in their direction.

“We all are, brother.” I smile.

“Nah, Eva and Sal still have a shot.” His tone has become more serious.

I scan his face. Yeah, Eva’s not for me. I could never taint her with the lost soul I am. King wants different for his girls. I get it.

You do realize he didn’t mention Misty?

Probably because she’s seen fucked-up shit like the rest of us. I reel it in. All thoughts of Eva are pushed from my mind. Maybe I shouldn’t come around this summer.

  Chapter 1

  Not Again

  Eva

  Four years later…

“Hey, you coming out of there anytime soon?” my drunken “date” growls on the other side of the bathroom door.

I roll my eyes. Just my freaking luck. I can’t believe I’ve found my way into trouble again.

King is going to kill me. I’ve been a pain in his ass since my mother became his dad’s old lady. I became an even bigger pain when King’s dad and my mom went for a ride they would never return home from.

King is nine years older than me. He was twenty-five when our parents died. He took me in without question. I’m sure he has regretted that every day since.

You probably think I was one of those sixteen-year-olds who spiraled out of control after losing the only father figure she had ever known and the mother she loved so dearly, but that isn’t the case.

I never gave King any real trouble when it came to my behavior, still don’t. Nope, that King could deal with. He would set my ass straight and send me on my way. No, the type of trouble I get into is the type I don’t even go looking for and still can’t understand how I keep finding it.

Just a few months ago, King stripped one of his brothers of his patch for getting piss drunk and grabbing me from behind. He sucked on my neck and groped my breasts when Misty ran to get King for help. King came storming out of his office, his voice rumbling like thunder.

“Have you lost your fucking mind?” he had roared.

Striker, the drunk brother who was pawing me, released me right away. “Brother, I—” Striker never finished his sentence. King knocked him out cold.

All the Lost Souls know not to put their hands on me. King goes straight ballistic if anyone even looks at me or Misty for that matter. Touching one of us is like committing suicide.

However, when it comes to me a lot of guys have a death wish. Some guy is always getting his ass handed to him because of me. Since I was sixteen, I’ve had a double-D cup, with hips and ass to match.

I’m five feet, four and a half inches tall. Yes, I am going to count my half. Every inch counts for this little mama here.

At twenty-two, you would think I have learned a thing or two. It’s not my fault. It’s not like I try to bring on the attention.

Hell, I go out of my way to avoid it. I wear baggy T-shirts and loose jeans in hopes to hide my curves. I even try to hide behind the mass of my curly bush of hair.

It doesn’t work. For some reason, guys like to see if they can get the chubby little nerd to drop her panties for them. It’s a wonder King even lets me out the house these days. I’ve packed on a few pounds that have gone straight to my hips and ass.

“Hey, you all right in there?” This guy doesn’t know when to quit. He scratches at the door like a puppy begging to get in. “I’m telling you, you’re in for a good time. Come on out.”

I groan and pout at the door. King is going to lose his shit when he finds out what I’ve gotten into this time. I bet he wishes I were more like my sister, Sal.

She never gives him any trouble, but I think that’s because she isn’t around. Sal may have everyone else fooled, but not me.

I guess that’s why King made sure I picked a college a state over. Not too far away, but far enough. I know he thought sending me and Misty away to college would be for the best, but it hasn’t worked out that way so far. We’re home more than we’re on campus and when we’re on campus, shit like this happens.

“Come on, Eva, open the door,” my “date” slurs from the other side of the door.

He’s such a jerk. He said he forgot his wallet in his apartment, and we would only need to stop here for a few seconds to get it. A few seconds turned into him having a few beers, which turned him into Mr. Touchy Feely.

The only reason I’m even on this date is because of Misty. She asked me to tag along on a double date with her and some guy she has been seeing. Well, my dear friend, Misty happened to get a stomach virus, which certainly stopped any plans she had to go out. She has been no good to the world for the last two days, held up in the bathroom with her phone and the toilet.

She cancelled on her date, but insisted I still go. I’m so pissed at her right now. I never date and I mean, never. King would have a coronary if he knew this is how my first date turned out.

A date with a douchebag. King has such big dreams for me. He wants his little sister to have it all.

Yup, I’m his little sister no matter who our parents are. He has always looked out for me. Now that he’s the president of the Lost Souls, he takes his role even more seriously. I think, to King, taking care of me is one of the duties he inherited from the former president, his dad.

“I should be studying for my architecture exam, not on a date with this douche,” I mumble to myself.

Then there’s the fact that I also have an interview King set up for me tomorrow morning. It’s for an internship at one of the brother’s firms.

Oh, yeah, the Lost Souls may be a bunch of down and dirty, red-blooded bikers, but there are some really wealthy ones among the ranks. You wouldn’t know it when at the club. They all blend in, rough, dirty, and as raw as they come. However, there are those among the brotherhood who have placed themselves in the right social circles to run shit.

I sigh heavily as I stare at my phone. There’s only one way out of this apartment, if I want out of here anytime soon.

  I plan to kill Misty.

  Brick

“I’ve got you, brother. I’ll take care of it,” I say to King on the other end of the line as I sit on the edge of my bed.

“Never doubted it. Take care of my girl and make sure you get in and out without unnecessary problems, yo
u feel me?”

“You’re not talking to a rookie, King. It’s been a long time since I’ve been a prospect. I did more than earn my patch.” I chuckle. “I’ll handle this like a pro.”

“Thanks, brother. Good to know I can still rely on a good few.”

“Call you later,” I say before disconnecting the call.

It’s the middle of the fucking night, but when my brothers call, I’m wide awake and ready to roll. The Lost Souls saved my life. When I was a kid, my dad used to beat my ass for fun. Cage Kennedy, the former prez of the Lost Souls, took me in like I was his son and raised me alongside his own boy, King.

I’d always been good with my hands and I loved to draw. I was also a wiz in school. Cage knew people in high places, so when he spotted my talents, he pulled some strings and sent me off to school. I didn’t have to worry about a thing. From the time I was seventeen, I’d been groomed to start Soul Deep Architecture and Construction.
