False Value Page 33

by Ben Aaronovitch

The 3-D printing in this book represents what was available during the period it was set, as do the drones and other bits of technology. 3-D printing is what they call a rapidly evolving technology and nobody really knows what its ultimate impact will be—certainly not me. Anyone tries to tell you different, feel free to hit them with a selfie stick.

Peter not only misquotes Sir Walter Scott: O, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive! But to add insult to injury, misattributes the quote to Shakespeare. This is entirely the fault of Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

  Acknowledgments

First I’d like to thank all the people at Orion Books who worked hard to translate the raw manuscript into a readable form and then distribute and sell it. So Katie Espiner who is head honcho, my editor Emad and copyeditor Steve, Stevie, Gen and Britt for publicity and marketing, Paul and Amber for audio production, Esther, Maggie and Dominic for selling the bloody things. Another Paul who will hopefully make the book glow in the dark and Tomas for the cover design. Plus all the booksellers who have to get up early in the morning to convince customers to buy books.

And not forgetting Kobna who will have to read this out loud.

Vital to the writing process itself are my agent John Berlyne, Andrew Cartmel, chief mistake pointer outer, and Anne Hall, my PA/researcher. Speaking of research I need to thank Kirsty Potter, Northumberland Police Forensic SOCO, Clive Hall, Stella Wisdom, Bob, Tim McArdle, Lynsey Dobbs, FosterCare UK, Philip Marshall and staff at the London Library, Penny Goodman, Classics at the University of Leeds and all the people on Twitter who answered my emergency research queries.

Finally there is my friend James Swallow who is still holding out for more Toby the wonder dog.
