  Chapter One

  Cal

"I'm drowning!" Birdie flaps her arms, splashing water everywhere. It's funny as hell but she'll kill me if I laugh.

She's not really drowning. She just thinks she is every time her feet don't touch the bottom of the pool. This is our second lesson and she's still terrified to go in the deep end.

"Take this," I tell her as I offer her the pool noodle.

She snatches it from me and holds onto it for dear life.

"Help me, you idiot!" she yells as she kicks her feet in an attempt to get to the shallow end.

"You're fine," I tell her as I take hold of the long green noodle and pull it toward me. Her legs brush against mine in the water and she quickly pulls them away.

"I am NOT fine," she says, her body bobbing up and down as she searches for the floor of the pool. She finds it and finally loosens the death grip she had on the pool noodle. "I almost died!"

"Not even close." I try to pull the noodle away but she keeps hold of it. "You can let go. You're in the shallow end."

She looks around to make sure I'm not lying, then slowly stands up. She's not very tall so even in the shallow end the water comes up to just below her breasts. My eyes immediately jump down to them. To those big round beautiful breasts that I'm only looking at because they're right there, sitting on top of the water like they're on display. It's not because I'm in any way attracted to Birdie.

Or at least that's what I tell myself whenever I feel a certain part of me reacting in a way it shouldn't. Like now.

  Goddamn, her breasts are perfect.

"I can't believe you!" Birdie says in disgust and I quickly look up from her breasts. Shit, she caught me staring.

  "Birdie, I wasn't—"

"How DARE you!" She raises her arms to wring the water from her hair. It causes her breasts to lift and I have to force myself not to look. "I TOLD you not to put me in the deep end!"

That's why she's mad? So I guess she didn't see me looking at her.

"I didn't put you in the deep end," I say, pulling the pool noodle aside.

She grabs it. "Leave it, in case you try to drown me again."

"For the last time, I wasn't trying to drown you. I was teaching you to float on your back and you drifted into the deep end. If you'd just stayed on your back instead of freaking out you would've been fine."

She glares at me. "Oh, so you just expect me to not react when a bee lands on my face?"

"It wasn't a bee. It was a fly."

"And how would you know from way over here in the shallow end?" She motions to it, her hand waving around as she continues her rant. "I can't believe you just left me like that! I could've drowned!"

"I didn't leave you. You were two feet away. And you know I'd never let you drown. You're Taylor's best friend. She'd kill me if I let anything happen to you."

Birdie rolls her eyes. "That's the only reason you'd save me? Because I'm Taylor's best friend?"

"That's not what I meant." I sigh. "Just forget it. Let's just finish the lesson."

"I can't." She wrings out her hair. "Not after almost dying."

"Birdie, we're never going to finish these lessons unless you actually try what I'm trying to teach you."

"Which I was doing, but then you left me! You can't leave a person who can't swim stranded all alone in the deep end! Every swim instructor knows that!"

"I'm not a swim instructor. I just know how to swim, and if you don't want my help, then just say so and we'll end these stupid lessons."

"You think they're stupid?" She huffs. "Fine, then just forget it! The lessons are over!" She pushes through the water to the edge of the pool.

"I didn't mean they were stupid. I just—" I stop as I watch her pull herself out of the water. Instead of facing the pool and using her arms to lift herself out, she faces the edge and does this thing where she awkwardly lifts her knee up on the tile.

I feel myself reacting again. In her current position, she's giving me a full view of her ass. Her perky round beautiful ass.

Birdie isn't a small girl. She's not fat, but she's definitely not skinny. Compared to my ex-girlfriend, Birdie would be considered overweight but that's not what I'd call her. I'd say she's curvy. Voluptuous. She has the kind of hips you want to grab onto and—

"Don't just stand there!" she says, still struggling to get out. "Help me!"

"Why can't you get out?" I ask, coming up behind her.

"I'm stuck on something." She looks down. "I think it's my suit. It's stuck on the side of the pool."

She tries to lift up but her suit pulls back, like it's glued to the wall. I've never seen that happen before. But that's Birdie. Strange things always happen to her.

"Looks like your suit is caught on something," I say, standing beside her.

"I just said that," she says, sounding exasperated. "Are you going to help me or not?"

"Lift up again," I say, leaning down to get a better look. She's wearing a red one-piece swimsuit and when she lifts up, I see it's the lower part of her suit that's stuck. By 'lower' I mean below her waist. Way below, as in, her pelvic region.

"Birdie, are you sure you want my help with this?"

  "Obviously! I'm stuck! I can't move!"

My eyes remain on her suit as she struggles to free herself. It's definitely stuck on that area. An area of her body I shouldn't be touching.

"Cal, hurry up! What's taking so long?"

I lean against the edge of the pool and look at her. "I don't think you're gonna want me to help with this."

  "Why? What's wrong?"

I force back a smile. "In order to help you I would uh, need to touch you in an area I'm pretty sure you don't want me touching."

She rolls her eyes. "I don't care if you touch my stomach. Just hurry up!"

"Um, yeah, it's not caught on your stomach. It's lower than that."

>   She looks down. "No, it's my stomach. I can feel it pulling there."

"It's pulling there but it's actually stuck lower than that." I slide my hand over her stomach. "See? You're not attached here."

She sucks in a breath and when our eyes meet, she quickly looks away. "Fine. So what do you have to do?"

"Hold on." I dunk into the water and open my eyes, then pop back up. "I don't know how you did it but your suit is stuck on the edge of a tile."

  "How? That doesn't make sense."

"You somehow wrapped a piece of your suit around the edge of the tile and it won't let go. Could you reach down and unhook it yourself?"

"If I let go I'll fall in the water."

"Maybe that would work. If you lower down instead of up, it might free it."

"Okay, I'll try." She slowly lowers into the pool. "It's not working."

I look and see the fabric pulling and stretching as she moves. "Wait. I think you're making it worse. It's gonna rip if you keep going. Lift up again."

She does, her arms shaking. "I can't keep holding myself up. You have to hurry."

I pause a moment, trying to figure out where to put my hands. "You sure about this? Maybe I should go get my mom."

"Dammit, Cal! Just do it! Hurry up!"

Choosing to go above the snag, rather than below, I put my hand on her lower abs and use my fingers to try to release her.

"What's wrong?" she asks, sounding out of breath from the effort of having to hold herself up.

"I can't get to it this way. It's stuck on the bottom."

"Then undo it where it's stuck. I can't keep holding myself up."

Shit. This is gonna be bad. Touching her there is going to make my cock react even if I tell it not to. It doesn't care Birdie's just a friend. If I touch a gorgeous woman—down there—it can't help itself, especially after seeing her breasts on display, and then her ass. Holy shit, it's already pushing against my swim trunks.

  "Cal!" Birdie yells.

  "Yeah, I'm working on it."

Taking a deep breath, I put one hand on her lower back to hold her in place, then slide my other hand over the area that's stuck, the tiny triangle region that dips between her thighs. My heart's beating fast and my hand is shaking. I need to get control of myself. This is Birdie. I shouldn't be nervous. Or turned on. She's a family friend. I've known her forever.

Glancing up, I see Birdie's neck move as she swallows. She's holding herself amazingly still as my fingers wrap around the part of the fabric that's stuck. I carefully tug at it, trying not to rip it.

"Did you get it?" Birdie asks, sounding even more out of breath.

  "Not yet."

The water keeps moving my fingers. I need to steady them so I rest my palm against her. Against the area between her legs that my hand normally only goes when pleasuring a girl.

  "Cal!" she yells.

"What?" I bark back, like I don't want to be doing this. Because I don't. Doing this is making me feel things for Birdie I shouldn't be feeling. She's my sister's best friend. And I can't stand her!

She shoots me an angry look. "Your hand!"

  "What about it?"

"It's—" She narrows her eyes at me. "Just move it!"

"If I move it I can't get your suit unhooked." I meet her stare. "Do you want me to do this or not?"

She huffs. "Fine. Just hurry up."

I focus back on her suit, trying to carefully move the fabric over the sharp edge of the tile.

"I swear I'm gonna kick your ass if you're getting pleasure out of this," Birdie says, gritting her teeth as she stares straight ahead, still holding herself up.

  "Pleasure?" I laugh. "Yeah, right."

"What's that supposed to mean?" I feel her looking at me, or more like glaring.

I ignore her and keep working on trying to free her suit.

Birdie blows out a breath and when I look up, I see her eyes are closed.

  "You okay?" I ask.

Her eyes pop open. "Are you done yet?"

  "Almost."

I slip my fingers around the layers of fabric she managed to get twisted around the pool tile. As my fingers move, my palm moves, over the sensitive area that normally drives a girl wild. I wonder it that's happening to Birdie. If she's feeling even a little turned on by this. I sure as hell am and my swim trunks can't hide it.

I can't let Birdie see me this way. She'd call me a pervert and a million other names, then tell my sister, who would tell my parents and I'd never hear the end of it.

  "Cal!" she cries out.

"What?" I rip my hand away.

She lifts up out of the water and flips around to sit down, her chest moving in and out as she struggles to breathe.

"What it is?" I ask. "Why'd you yell out my name like that?"

"I didn't—" She takes a moment to catch her breath. "I was letting you know I was free. You didn't have to keep..." She takes a breath. "Working on it."

We're both quiet a moment. Birdie wipes the water from her face while I remain frozen against the side of the pool, willing my cock to lower so I can move.

"Never had THAT happen before," Birdie mutters.

"That tile needs to be sanded down. The edge shouldn't be sticking out like that. I'll tell my dad so he can have the pool guy fix it."

Birdie motions to me. "You can move now. You don't have to keep standing there."

Knowing my swim trunks are still tented, I remain where I am. I smile and turn toward Birdie, resting my arm on the tile. "I like it here. The sun's at just the right angle."

She rolls her eyes. "You're such a dork."

"But I saved you. You gotta give me credit for that."

"You only saved me to make up for almost drowning me."

"I didn't almost drown you. Stop saying that."

"Then stop leaving me alone in the deep end." She folds her arms over her chest. She's back to being the Birdie who hates me. She alternates between hating me and putting up with me. I'm the same way with her. We've been this way forever.

"You're a horrible swim teacher," she says, kicking her legs back and forth in the water.

I move in front of her, grabbing both her legs mid-swing. "You're a horrible student."

She narrows her eyes at me. "It's the teacher's fault if the student isn't learning, proving my theory that you're a horrible teacher."

I keep hold of her legs, my body between them as I fix my eyes on hers. "If the student refuses to listen to the teacher, it's the student's fault, proving my theory that you suck as a student."

"For your information, I get excellent grades." She struggles to free her legs but I keep hold of them.

"You get good grades in school. Not in the pool. In fact, I'd give you a D. Or actually, given today's lesson, I'd give you an F."

"Asshole!" She reaches down to the water and splashes it in my face.

I release her legs and splash back.

"Stop it!" She kicks her legs, splashing me even more.

"You started it!" I keep splashing her, using both hands.

  "You're such a child!"

  "And you're not?"

"Cal!" My mom comes out of the house, an angry look on her face. "Calvin George Tuckerman, you stop that right now!"

"George?" Birdie snickers. "Your middle name is George?"

"Shut up," I say as I make my way to the edge of the pool. "Mom, we were just messing around."

My mom stands next to Birdie, her hands on her hips. "I don't care what you were doing. I need you to be quiet. Mrs. Tippie just called and complained about the noise. You need to settle down."

Birdie gives me a smug smile. "Yeah, Cal. Settle down. You're disturbing the neighbors."

I ignore her and talk to my mom. "Birdie was louder than me. You should be yelling at her."

My mom sighs. "I'm not yelling at anyone. I'm simply asking you to be quieter so I don't get calls from the neighbors. You know how noise upsets Mrs. Tippie."

"The lady's like 100 years old," I say. "How c
an she even hear anymore?"

"She's 82," my mom says, "and her hearing is good enough to hear you two arguing. What was it about this time?"

Birdie and I look at each other, which turns into a stare contest like we did when we were kids.

"Just keep it down, okay?" I hear my mom say. I glance over and see her going inside.

  "Ha!" Birdie says. "Beat you!"

"It wasn't a contest." I swim away from her to the other side of the pool.

"Says the guy who lost," Birdie says as she leans back on her hands.

I stand up in the water, which comes to waist deep on me in the shallow end. "So we're done here or what?"

"What do you mean?" she asks, kicking her feet in the water. "Like done for today?"

"Done for good. You seem to think I suck as a teacher so why keep doing this?"

She watches her legs moving in the water. I assume she's not going to answer so I get out of the pool.

  "Cal, wait," she says.

"What?" I grab my towel from the chair.

  "You're not the worst."

"Worst what?" I wrap the towel around me.

"Teacher. I mean, you're not great, but given your lack of training, you're not bad."

She stands up and my eyes can't help but lower to her body. Her full breasts spilling out of her suit. Those rounded hips. Those soft fleshy thighs. She has the kind of body I love on a girl, and yet I've never dated a girl like her. I always date skinny girls who are always trying to lose weight so they can be even skinnier. I'm not sure why I date girls like that and I never even thought about it until one day last summer when Birdie asked me about it. She made a comment about skinny girls being my type and I told her it wasn't true. That I preferred girls with curves. She said if that's really true, then why don't I date girls with curves? I didn't have an answer and still don't. All I know is right now, the type of girl standing across the pool from me is the type of girl I'm most attracted to.
