CHAPTER 1
Brendan
For fecks sake.
As if I don’t have anything better to do than wait around at the airport all day so I can babysit a Yank kid, now the plane is delayed. I take a seat in the waiting lounge and try not to breathe too deeply. This place stinks. All of these people rushing around set off my senses and as a wolf, my nose is one of the most sensitive parts of my body.
One of. I feel a throbbing in my groin at the thought that I haven’t had a woman for a long time. They don’t interest me much, truth be told, but still a man has needs.
And I am so much more than a man.
Two women walk past me, luggage rattling along behind them, and I see the way they pause and look at me. I ignore them. This is perhaps why I haven’t had a woman in a long time; I’m not the most sociable of people and have never mastered the art of flirting. Their hungry eyes and the smell of lust coming from them just don’t arouse me, although, I notice with a quick glance, at least one of them is attractive. Then I sigh and turn away, knowing I just can’t be bothered with the effort that would have to go into making chit-chat, arranging to meet up, all of that stuff human women insist on doing, and all just for a quick fumble. It doesn’t seem worth it to me.
My uncle Padraic always told me I would know when I met the right woman. We’re wolves, Brendan, he would say. We mate for life. And when you meet your mate, you’ll know. But I’m thirty-two and I haven’t met her yet, so I’m thinking she doesn’t exist. Which is probably a good thing, because the lifestyle I lead would put any sensible woman off.
Thinking about women I wonder idly what this kid will be like and how much of a pain in the ass she is likely to be. I’m still annoyed at Cormac for putting me on babysitting duty when we have so much else going on. The O’Donnell brothers have been turning up the heat ever since their father died and if we don’t nip that in the bud there could be a turf war on our hands. My other brother Aiden is in America on other business, which meant he got to dodge this one.
I mean, just what are we supposed to do with some twenty year old Mob princess who is no doubt spoiled rotten and thinks the world owes her something? Hopefully it won’t be for too long, just until her father has sorted out whatever is going down in New York.
It’s not that we don’t owe him a favor. As one of the heads of the Irish-American Mob, and my childhood friend, Michael Malone is a guy I want to stay on the right side of. He practically mentored me through my teenage years; though not, of course, through the biggest changes. No, Aiden and Cormac are the only ones who would understand about that since Uncle Padraic died.
My brothers and I – triplets – are all werewolves. Thanks to a Druid curse which affects the first son in every generation in the Killanney family, we go full on furry every full moon. And whenever we want to of course, but at full moon we get no choice in the matter. It could be seen as a hindrance, I suppose, but in our line of work the super strength, speed and healing abilities that we retain even in human form come in handy. No one challenges the Killanney brothers.
At least, until the O’Donnell’s came along. I’m of the mind that we show them the extent of our powers and well and truly scare them off, but Cormack is eager that we avoid any turf wars. Not because he doesn’t like a fight –no one fights like Cormac – but because the O’Donnell’s are nasty bastards and don’t care about dragging innocents into gang wars. We’ve been able to keep an uneasy peace in Dublin for over a decade, and everyone but the O’Donnell’s want it kept that way. Of course, they don’t truly understand what they’re dealing with.
I yawn and stretch my legs and am glad when a voice over the loudspeaker announces the plane from New York is finally here. I get up and go over to the doors, waiting for Keeley Malone. Other than the fact that she’s a redhead and presumably looks something like her father, I don’t know what to expect. I haven’t seen her since she was a baby and we flew over for the christening at Michael’s invitation.
I’m hopping impatiently from one foot to the other, watching the passengers come in and looking for a ginger haired girl with a petulant expression.
Then I see her an absolute goddess walk into the airport lounge and I feel my cock twitch instantly in my pants. Lust washes over me. Whoever this woman is, I want her in a way I can’t ever remember feeling so keenly and so instantly.
She has long, tumbly strawberry blonde hair, creamy skin with huge eyes and a luscious mouth and a body that should be illegal. Big, juicy tits that are only just contained in the white shirt she’s wearing, and curves that have curves. Her thick thighs and hips are encased in tight denim that shows off the curve of her waist, and every sway of that full ass makes my cock twitch again. I’m supposed to be looking for Michael’s daughter, but I can’t take my eyes off this woman.
Then she notices me looking and starts walking towards me, I can’t believe my luck as she smiles at me, her lips plump and flushed. As she gets closer I can see how dilated her pupils are and catch a scent of desire from her. Whatever this is, she feels it too. I think of my Uncle Padraic and wonder if this is the one.
My mate. My woman.
Then she stops in front of me and holds out her hand. I realize she’s younger than I first thought; early twenties maybe.
“Brendan Killanney?”
I frown at her, then the truth dawns on me and my mouth falls open. It can’t be, can it?
“I’m Keeley Malone.”
CHAPTER 2
Keeley
Oh my God, he’s even more gorgeous than his picture.
My dad has a photo of himself and Brendan when they were younger. Dad is in his late twenties and Brendan a teenager. Even then he was handsome, but I never expected the fresh-faced boy in the photo would have grown into this absolute hunk of a man. He looks like he sweats pure testosterone. In his tight jeans and dark colored crew neck that clings to every cut of muscle, it’s impossible not to notice how good his body is. This man works out. His dark hair and emerald green eyes make a striking contrast, and that dimple in his chin is to die for. He makes the boys back home look like wimps.
Not that the boys back home would ever come anywhere near me. They’re too scared of my father. Being a Mafia princess isn’t always easy. My father is a big player in the Irish-American Mob and while he has always made su
re that me, my mom and my sisters have as normal a life as possible, some things you can’t ignore. Like the hulking bodyguard that went everywhere with us and the fact that the only kids who would dare be friends with me had fathers in the same game. In many ways I led a sheltered life. Teenage rebellion was something I would have welcomed, but it’s hard to rebel against a man like my father, when everyone is scared of him and there’s literally nothing you could do that would shock him. So mostly I’ve just amused myself with music and shopping, and studying photography. It’s a passion of mine, but what I don’t want is to get work on the basis of my family name.
At the moment though, there’s some serious heat going down with whatever my father is involved in and so while it gets sorted out I’ve been shipped off to Ireland to stay with the Killanney brothers. The youngest – though there’s not much in it as they’re triplets – is Dad’s old mentee, Brendan. I wasn’t very happy about coming to Ireland on my own while my mother and little sisters went to stay with my aunt in Florida, but now I’m starting to rethink that.
Brendan Killanney is hot.
As I walked towards him I could see him looking me up and down with blatant lust in his eyes, and it feels good, so that I put an extra wiggle in my step as I approach him. But as soon as I announce who I am his expression shuts down fast. Damn.
“Nice to meet ya, I’m Brendan,” he says with a thick Irish accent that makes my tummy flutter. It would be even better if he actually sounded like he thought it was nice to meet me rather than looking at me with a now guarded expression. I realize he’s feeling bad for looking at me that way, not knowing who I was, and not for the first time do I wish I was someone other than Keeley Malone. Surely Brendan isn’t scared of my father too? I’ve heard the whispers about the Killanney brothers. Or perhaps he’s just not the sort of guy to lust after his friend’s daughter, which is certainly admirable, but I can’t help feeling disappointed.
