“Ready?” he asked.
She grabbed her parka and slid it on. “Yeah.”
They pressed their gloved hands together as they walked through the snow to Gallagher’s Café, where they were meeting Uncle Tim and her cousin Maura for lunch. Maura had just gotten into town, a new move here to work part-time at Dolly’s bookshop.
“I can hardly believe you went along with your Uncle Tim in convincing Maura to move here,” Grant said as they approached the door.
“I know I’m usually against meddling, but Uncle Tim made a good case, and I thought she’d be a good fit for the job at Dolly’s bookshop. Between Uncle Tim and me, we convinced her.”
“But Mrs. G put the idea in his head.”
She shrugged. “She has good ideas sometimes. Didn’t she get you here?” She kissed his cheeks, one of his favorite gestures.
He kissed her back, and warmth whizzed through her. This new Grant-included zone brought her fun and pleasure, and even another layer of security, of their togetherness.
He squeezed her hand. “Yeah. All right.” He opened the door and they peeled off their outer layers in the heated interior.
“My favorite new couple,” Mrs. G said, patting them each on an arm. “Tim and Maura are waiting over there. You do good work, Jena.”
Jena wondered if she weren’t just talking about her help with the café’s electrical and appliances. Mrs. G had been unusually happy about Maura moving to town.
Uncle Tim stood and shook Grant’s hand before hugging Jena. They said hello to her cousin.
“Maura, this is my boyfriend, Grant Manning. Grant, Maura.”
Grant squeezed Jena’s hand again and she grinned at him. The look of quiet joy on his face gave her the tingles.
“Good to meet you, Grant,” Maura said.
They sat across from Maura and Uncle Tim, still holding hands.
“How was your fall?” Maura asked. They hadn’t caught up in a while with the busyness of Maura’s move.
“Sweet,” Jena said, glancing at Grant.
“Agreed.” Grant caressed her hand.
Her life was sweet, in every season, especially now that Grant was a part of her plans.
