  Jake was certain these gifts gained him his artistic ability to draw and give people tattoos, his acute sense of smell, and why he was so damn committed to Lori Nelson. His fifth-grade classmate, Sally Brewster, could no longer draw like before. Someone else—God knows who—was wondering why they couldn't smell anything anymore. And then there was Lori. She had been committed to a guy who'd been beating her for months, but as soon as her wish was granted she was suddenly unable to commit to anyone.

  Jake stopped dwelling on it. No sense strolling painful paths.

  His phone vibrated in his hand. He looked down to find Lori's reply.

  I'm tired. Tomorrow?

  Jake looked back at Russ, still in the window. The dog that mostly hated him seemed like his only friend in the world.

  The clock ticked to midnight.
