Long before the opening events of this story the fragments of thiscelebrated gem are supposed to have been taken from a wreck by an oldsea captain, and secreted by him on a lonely island in Roanoke Sound.

This aged captain, now quite feeble, sends for his niece and herdaughter. They invite two bright boys to accompany them, and engaginga steam launch the four, in company with the owner--a trustysailor--set out for the lonely island. Arriving there they aredistressed at finding the captain already dead. To add to theirdiscomfort they also discover that the former owners of the diamondhave appeared upon the scene. The little party is forcibly madeprisoner, and their captors demand that they forthwith produce theprecious stone. This, of course, they are unable to do, butdiscovering among the old captain's effects a curious cryptogram, theyare led to hope that its solution may reveal the secret hiding placeof the diamond, and thus restore to them their freedom. This theoryeventually proves correct, but not until after the party has enduredmany hardships, and passed through many exciting experiences.
