Surprised Daddy Page 21

by Liam Kingsley

The guy bit his lip. I could tell he was nervous. Or impatient. I didn’t mean to keep him waiting.

So I turned and sprinted back into the trees to run with my pack brothers.

After a few hours of running, howling and yapping, a few more whiskeys at the Lodge and an outrageous amount of birthday cake, I stumbled home — alone. I lived as close to the Lodge as you could get, but the trek across the manicured grounds and through the small thicket of trees into my yard felt like it took an eternity. I fell into my living room through the doorway and barely made it to my bedroom.

“Happy birthday, old man!” I said to the drunk guy in the mirror before I fell backwards onto my bed. Something sharp dug into my neck and I fished around to grab it - it was the invitation to the gaming convention that Nic had left there.

In my drunken haze, I remembered her encouragement. You should go! You could meet someone…

I remembered how I’d just met someone on the run, and I wasn’t interested in him.

  You could meet someone special...

“Yeah, I could meet nerds,” I grumbled, then let out a frustrated sigh and admitted out loud, “I am a nerd, too. I am. I am king of the nerds. I made a video game, what’s nerdier than that? Huh? NOTHING. Nothing! I am the king of the nerds. Me. The king.”

I sat up and pointed at the guy in the mirror. “The king! Nerd king! You hear me?”

The guy just kept pointing at me and I broke out laughing, “That’s what I’m saying! Me! The king! Ah man, you’re a riot.”

I hauled myself up off the bed with the intention of some water, but the next ten minutes were a blur. I was at my computer. I was smashing the exclamation point and hitting Enter. I was enthusiastically RVSPing. I was going to the stupid gaming convention, where I would be king. King of the nerds.

I poured myself another drink to celebrate, and I spent the rest of the night indulging in my favorite hobby: playing RuneMaze, the game I’d developed, and helping kids on the live online version of it while I listened to my favorite guilty pleasure - a love song dedication radio show. I couldn’t get enough of those romantic songs and the host’s voice was to die for. I felt like I melted into my chair whenever I listened to him croon on about pop ballads...

When I logged into the game, I laughed to myself. I loved the names that kids came up with for their avatars in the game. FangHunter was my favorite, though. I always ended up helping that kid with some real tricky puzzles. He was there that night and we went hard on some of the more challenging levels.

By the time I went to bed, I felt good again. I even felt young! I was King Nerd and I was celebrating me and all that I had come to be. Successful, rich... and alone.
