  Where I stood.

  With a three-year-old.

  In my arms.

  Annette

Some days, it’s like trying to nail Jell-O to a wall.

  —True story

I’d just gotten out of the shower when I heard a godawful shriek coming from downstairs. I shrugged into my robe, blew a kiss to the picture of Percy I had on my nightstand—the man, not the plant—and hurried downstairs. “Did a velociraptor just die? Because stranger things have happened in this house.”

Before anyone could answer, Defiance caught my attention. Or, more to the point, what she was holding caught my attention. I gaped at the blond-haired, blue-eyed angel in her arms. Gigi gaped at Defiance. The chief gaped at them all. But Samuel laughed and threw his arms around Deph’s neck. Then he looked around and asked her, “Cat?”

Her jaw fell to the floor. To bring someone out of the veil, she had to use the life force of a living creature. Did she use Ink to bring Samuel out? And if so, how was she going to tell Roane?

That was a conversation I did not want to be a part of. I wanted to watch it, of course, but from a safe distance.

I walked up to them, pinched Samuel’s cheek, and looked at my BFF. “I guess you have a kid now. This week just gets weirder and weirder. Oh! Coffee.”
