With a reluctant sigh, she hugged the dog once more then followed her mother and Carson to the truck.
The next morning Carson met with the detectives investigating the incident while Lorelei and Laurel stayed with Princess at the veterinarian’s office.
“I have a couple of questions for you.”
The officer leaned back in his chair and clasped his hands behind his head. “Ask away.”
“Do you have any idea how this guy found us? We live in a very small town and neither of us has ever seen him nor his vehicle. And, believe me; we, as well as the whole town have been on the lookout for him for months.”
“Honestly, I think it was just circumstance he spotted you all. Turns out he’s lived in this town for a few weeks. We’ve had a rash of burglaries in the surrounding communities, but couldn’t pin down the culprit. We uncovered enough evidence in the vehicle and in his apartment to convict and send him to prison for a very long time had he lived through this.”
Carson breathed a sigh of relief that he hadn’t missed God in the chaos of the preceding weeks. He thanked the officer and left. Three days later the trio and their canine companion made the remainder of the six hour trip from Stars Crossing, Tennessee to Laurel, Mississippi. Late Christmas Eve, Carson and Lorelei took a walk under a moon-less sky. One star, high in the heavens shone bright upon the earth. Peace filled the air.
Carson pulled Lorelei in his arms and raised her gloved fingers to his lips. Dissatisfied with the taste of leather, he cupped her face in his hands and lowered his mouth to hers. What he intended to be a sweet, tender gesture turned all-too-quickly into a heated embrace. He ended the kiss in slow, measured degrees until she lay limp against his chest. He swallowed the heart clogging his airways, and cleared his throat. “I asked you once and you refused to marry me out of fear and desperation. Will you marry me, now?”
In answer, Lorelei smiled up at him, rose on tiptoe, and her lips reached up to receive his once more.
