The Iron Veil Page 34

“That thing was super creepy, by the way,” Justin said.

“Yeah, he’s a relatively new addition,” Wyatt said.

More water zoomed by and it looked like they were getting farther and farther away from the shore.

Then Wyatt said, “Shoot. I totally forgot. It’s not late enough for the island to be out. You guys know that.”

  Right. Justin had forgotten.

“How about the AquaGlobe in Rathe?” Pari suggested.

“Good idea.” Wyatt clicked on his touchpad and brought up a big public square with fountains and benches and a ton of people. Right in the center was a huge floating sphere of water with people swimming in it.

“Oh my god, that’s awesome!” Justin said. “Why didn’t we go there? It looks so fun!”

  “Ten, nine, eight,” Wyatt intoned.

  “What’s going on?”

  “Watch! Three, two, one—”

On the displays that showed the various scenes around Greystrand, people started to disappear. Players just winked out of existence. But not everyone. And not all at once.

“What is this?” Pari asked. “What’s happening?”

“The game is shutting down. All the players will be waking up now. You guys are in the last group. I made sure of that.”

  Then Justin realized something.

  “Wait! What about Klothar?”

  Wyatt just shrugged.

“Oh, no way.” He turned to the ranger, who had a stoic look on his face.

“I have enjoyed our adventures, lad.” He gripped Justin’s hand. “May you have many more.”

  “Klothar…!”

He couldn’t believe this was the end. He felt his insides crumble with sadness.

Pari looked like she was about to cry too. This sucked.

Wyatt gave them both a small nod and said, “Remember: Princess Tallynor, Portland, 72 hours. Ten million bucks. Each. Starting now.”

  Then Justin’s world faded away.
