Everyone amens along with her. But I stare in horror, shaken that she used the “boyfriend” word about Harry, in front of him.

We haven’t exactly had that talk yet – we just fell into this fantasy world and kind of stayed there, and now I look like I’m putting pressure on him, via my mom.

“Uh, Mom,” I say, pulling at my collar, “we actually haven’t talked about-”

“Oh, I’m his boyfriend,” Harry suddenly says. “And he’s my boyfriend.” He turns to me. “Joshua, was there any confusion regarding that? I thought it was settled, no?”

“Um. Yeah,” I say blankly, nodding. “Or…yeah, no. Yeah. It’s settled. Yeah.”

“Well, then!” my mom says, helping herself to some cornbread. “I didn’t even notice I’d used that word. Things sure do happen quickly, huh?”

He smiles at me, and it feels like a gift. And he was a gift – my Halloween surprise. Every second since then has just been a bonus.

“Might seem that way,” Harry nods, squeezing my hand under the table again. “But sometimes, accidents happen on purpose.”

  The End

“It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right…

I hope you had the time of your life”
