his thoughts, but the nightwalker had closed his mind. He considered following the nightwalker for a brief second, and then reconsidered. He didn’t want to expend his energy on a worthless quest. He searched for the nearest Roman camp. He needed to feed.

Eventually, the mountain range cascaded down to a coastal region. Tobia chose to stay hidden in the mountains. His life proved cold and lonely, but safe enough. He searched the mountains and found several cavernous areas that he used as his sanctuary, slowly outfitting them with comforts. Each place across the mountain chain had been equipped with blankets, jugs of wine, and stashes of coins. He moved stealthily throughout what he had come to think of as his territory. He fed from the Romans and the Gauls that came to fight the Romans. The Gauls reminded him of his own people though, so he preferred to satisfy his hunger with the Romans.

Every now and then he would sense the other nightwalker. He chose to avoid him, but if push came to shove, he would fight the creature to protect his territory. He sensed the other was far weaker, feeding much less frequently. He didn’t consider him much of a threat, but still wanted to avoid possible conflict.

At night he was happiest. He felt free and powerful, doing what ever he wanted. He fed and he ran through the mountains. During the days, he lay curled up in blankets in one hole or another. Even with the blankets, he didn’t feel comforted. It was the usually mid-day when he felt loneliest. He missed his master. His longing felt like a physical pain in his chest. If he ever ran into his master again he would either kill him, or kiss him, or both.
